Elysium Review

0

Neill Blomkamp would be no body today without having made District 9 in 2009. The sci-fi mockumentary turned action film was a refreshing original film in the midst of all the other rehashes, franchises, and reboot. It was fun story that turned more tragic toward the end, with lessons to be learned by the characters and stark political comparison’s to society. Sadly, his second big budget film, Elysium, is a watered down mess that focuses on unbelievable technology, instead of innovation and humanity.

It is hard to believe that Good Will Hunting actor Matt Damon has come into the action scene so easily, and he is by far the best part of this movie. His character, a reformed convict who works in a robot factory, is inflicted with radiation (not turning him into the Hulk, sadly), but rather driving him to get to Elysium, a haven for rich people in the skies, with technology to heal all ailments.

Damon brings seriousness to the role and a viciousness that made me feel for the character. He only wants to be healthy again and does anything to get it. He gets some good quips and one-liners in the film but tends to be weighted down by the convoluted rules and world in which the film takes place. Even when he is strapped into an exoskeleton for most of the movie (why do they even exist? Who needs these or even uses them?), he embodies the distress and need to get to Elysium more than anyone else in the film.

Jodie Foster was absolutely wasted as the defense secretary on Elysium. Her only job seems to be preventing random ships from landing in the sphere, which she sucks at. At time her knowledge of the situations at hand or ability to maneuver things in that (separate) government is too hard to believe. Even I can’t suspend that much disbelief for her character. As for her acting, however, she was truly a menacing presence and embodied the twisted character she was there to portray.

Sharlto Copely was on full blast, playing something we’ve never seen before. Instead of a bumbling manager of alien affairs in D9 and the interesting mechanic of the A-Team, we see a near psychotic secret agent / mercenary that seems to be outfitted with some odd cybernetics. His intentions are clear in the beginning but we soon lose any track of what he is thinking later on the film, due to a shocking incident that befalls him I assume. The third act of the film focuses on his conflict with Matt Damon’s character and is devoid of any and all actual purpose. I’m unsure why took certain actions later in the film and because of this, lost interest in his character as well.

Earth and Elysium at this point in time have existed side by side for several years. There is no talk of how it was built or why they have re-atomizing technology, stuff that can heal anyone afflicted by anything, even those who took a grenade to the face. We are not told how this came to exist or why it only resides on the space station. The robot police and enforcers are also a really cool idea, as Damon’s character is one of the builders, but they were under utilized, instead focusing on sleeper agents, Kruger and his cronies.

The Elysium structure (and all of Blomkamp’s theatrical pieces) owes everything to Halo (and Gundam Wing too). Space colonies and insurrectionists aren’t anything new, but the visuals are almost taken directly from other well-known works. The over crowded, futuristic look of California happens to look identical to South Africa of District 9. Almost exactly too, with the scrap metal, bland landscape, and overt poverty.

By the end of the film, only one character has truly gone through an arc, while no one else learned anything. The film ends on a semi-happy ending, but causes more questions than answers. Why can’t citizens of Elysium be arrested, especially if they’re in data sensitive areas or broken many (supposed) laws along the way. Also why are the citizens of Earth under Elysium’s radars? The film gives too many solutions to problems that were not addressed earlier in the film.

The visuals in this film are one of the few redeeming factors. The police robots are all believable and move around with such fluidity that had me entranced anytime they were on screen. Elysium as an inhabitable space object was also a spectacle to behold, despite how reminiscent to colonies from the Gundam Wing anime series it is. There are several in film shots in particular that had me thinking and impressed with camera usage and perspective, again, on of the few moments worth watching.

All in all, this movie is one that is suitable for a Redbox rental, if not a TV film. It is forgettable due to all the forced political points forced down your throat, while not presenting anything new or creative along the way. Blomkamp needs to take his talent to the next level or will always be remembered for his one note films.

Guardians of the Galaxy Set Photos

1

The first set photos from Guardians of the Galaxy have come online this weekend after an outdoor sequence was caught by passerbys. The photos give away no plot points or show any of the title characters, however, we get to see a plethora of people in makeup, especially with different colored skin. Oh, and some NOVA corps members! One is even stuffing his face. My assumption is that this sequence is taken from the destruction of Xandar, home of the Nova Corps, but without any context or script in hand it is all speculation. Take a look at the photos below, but don’t hold your breath. We have a year until release and I bet tons more photos will be hitting the internet soon.

Rumor has it, that this may be Glenn Close in make up, leading the Nova Corps. What do you think, is it her?

Video: Days of Future Past Trailer (UPDATED)

0

UPDATE: Apparently Fox owns the right to this clip? Gosh, big studios always trying to keep the little man down. Too bad I have my own copy! Stay tuned while I get it uploaded.

UPDATE 2: Someone else got a longer version of the trailer showing off more of what we expect from the cinematic trailer. It seems a lot more of this takes place in the Future than anticipated.

Fox showed off a trailer of the upcoming X-men film, Days of Future Past at SDCC this year, which had footage of the old cast, new cast, and showing our first footage of the new mutants (Bishop/Warpath). This past weekend at Fantasia Fest, a fan took his phone in, risking his life and limb (not really) to get us a piece of that trailer. We have that YouTube link for your viewing pleasure here, so take in the blurry cam footage and get excited for the next X-movie.

First Look: Thor: The Dark World Trailer [updated]

0

What a glorious wednesday! We get new comic books (on my way to get some right now) and now a full length (not teaser) Thor: The Dark World trailer that is full of information and most of all, Loki. Watch the trailer here and leave your thoughts in the comments. Scroll past the trailer for a few notes I’d love to share after you watch the complete trailer too.

The Dark World trailer is shaping up to get me really excited for Thor’s next outing. We’re going to see more of the 9 realms (if not more) and get Christopher Eccleston as the villain, which you can hear his voice around the 2/3 mark above. My initial assumption was that Loki wouldn’t play a large part in this film, but obviously he will be there along the way, including the Warriors 3 and Sif, who is taking a much more prominent role due to the presumed love triangle.

UPDATE: Around the 32 second mark, Loki is in his prison, but on the far side, we see more prisoners that look unlike anything we’ve come across yet. My hopes are Badoon (Guardians of the Galaxy reference) to help explore the other races in the cosmic universe, but they could also just be other Asgardians. This is a prison built by Thor’s great-grandfather Buri,” producer Craig Kyle explained to Empire magazine of the shot above. “While the exterior still feels very ancient and stone, the inside of these chambers have been upgraded to hold in new creatures and beasts. Across the way [from Loki], you see Marauders [rag-tag invaders of the Nine Realms] and demons.

Lastly, the trailer ends on a comedic, yet visually stunning treat, a Kronan. Kronans showed up in Journey into Mystery when Thor first appeared and made another prominent appearance during Planet Hulk/World War Hulk. They can also be fought in the Avengers Initiative mobile game (Android and iOS that severely needs an update to its roster, but ComicUI loves it anyway). They have the nickname Stone Men from Saturn, and that scene seems to be very Middle Earth/Game of Thrones looking, so we should see some spectacular battles.

If you see any tidbits or secrets we missed, please let us know asap!

More Lego Marvel Superhero Characters

1

LEGO and TellTale Games have crafted some of the most addicting, family friendly games to date with their recreation of well known franchises. First and most famously were the Star Wars films, followed by Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Batman/DC heroes as of late. This year, however, they pulled out all the stops and managed to surprise me and grab my attention with the Marvel Superheroes game that features over 100 Marvel characters and some great, innovative gameplay.

We’ve shared some trailers before on ComicUI, but the past few weeks have given us some more characters on the roster that I never would have expected to see in a game. After the Wolverine was released to theaters, we get to see Jean Grey from X-men cartoon, and the villain from the film, Silver Samurai. Take a look at them below.

On top of these more well known characters, we’re going to get a handful of unknowns but ones that are just as cool! These include a LEGO version of Stan Lee (creator of most of these heroes), Agent Coulson, Howard the Duck, and Squirrel Girl! The roster is getting more eclectic, but I’m pretty sure I’m excited about all the ones we’ve not heard yet. Crossing my fingers for Sentry if at all possible!

Also confirmed in the game are (heroes/villains alike) Abomination, Beast, Black Widow, Blob, Captain America, Colossus, Cyclops, Deadpool, Destroyer, Doctor Doom, Doctor Octopus, Elektra, Frost Giants, Galactus, Gambit, Green Goblin, Hawkeye, H.E.R.B.I.E. , Hulk, Human Torch, Iceman, Invisible Woman, Iron Man, Iron Patriot, Phoenix, Juggernaut, Kingpin, The Leader, Lizard, Curt Connors, Loki, Magneto, Malekith the Accursed, Mr. Fantastic, Ms. Marvel, Nick Fury, The Punisher, Rhino, Roxxon Guard, Sabretooth, Sandman, Sentinels, Silver Surfer, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, Storm, The Thing, Thor, Venom, Viper, Vulture, War Machine, and Wolverine. Pick up your copy of LEGO Marvel Superheroes this April for all major consoles, including next-gen Xbox One and PS4.

Days of Future Past Filming Quicksilver at 3600FPS

1

This isn’t as spoilerish or teasing as much as usual, but Bryan Singer’s latest tweet brings out the filmmaker in me. He posted a picture on the social network site (below) and along with it had the following statement “Brightest set I’ve ever filmed on. #3600framespersecond #Quicksilver #XMen #DaysOfFuturePast” which happens to be blowing my mind right now.

Filming at 3600 frames per second is around 150 times more frames per second than average film (24 fps), which means it can be slowed down by a rate of 150 as well, meaning that Quicksilver moves that much faster than normal people (until visual effects and post production is done on the piece). Imagine right now that Peter Jackson’s Hobbit films are done at 48 fps, 2x faster than usual, so this is something that will look awesome on screen.

Along with this increased frame rate, much more light is needed to ensure proper exposure, hence why it is in fact the brightest set he has been on (although maybe an exaggeration). Gosh, this is just blowing my mind right now, and I wish I was there to see how it was filmed. Well, I can’t wait to see Quicksilver’s costume (if any) and finally get a taste of his super speed on screen.

On a side note, it has been confirmed by Singer himself that the Scarlet Witch will not be appearing in the film, just her brother. Unlike the Avengers 2 which will include both siblings, we will only get one half of Magneto’s lineage in this movie.

August Games with Gold: Crackdown & Dead Rising 2 + DLC

1

Games WIth Gold has struck again this August with not one game, but 2 and some DLC! Judging by the average price these games are going for, we’re getting around $60 worth of free games, making Games with Gold much better than months prior. The scheduling on these is a bit screwy so please take advantage of these games while they’re being offered.

First up we get Crackdown (normally $14.99), a third person open-world based shooter/platformer that was a huge hit back in 2008, mostly due to the Halo 3 beta being included with every purchase. I enjoyed the game with its online cooperative multiplayer and open world. Imagine a super soldier in a GTA type environment. Get it while the getting is good. Crackdown will be available via Xbox LIVE dashboard or online for Gold members from August 1 through the 15th. I’d give this game a solid 7 out of 10 for the expansiveness and addictiveness of obtaining all the ability orbs.

Picking up from there, the remainder of August will see Dead Rising 2 (normally $29.99) and Dead Rising 2: Case Zero (normally 4.99) available for free until the 31st. Both games have hordes of zombies in which you will find hundreds of ways to dispose of via weapon creation and brutality. You can preview Dead Rising 2 here and Case Zero here. We will post again when they become available for Xbox Live Gold subscribers. Enjoy your games, we’ll front the tab this time.

Daily Awesome:Fan-Made Venom Short Film

0

Fan made short-films tend to be pieces of work that stay true to the source material and provide a glimpse, sometimes fueling a larger fire, at how a character can work on the medium. In fact, I’ve personally made a film showcasing The Sentry, my favorite character in the Marvel universe albeit on no budget and the worst equipment possible, but the writing and story I’m more than proud of. The past year, around SDCC time, fans have been treated to a few short fan films. Last year’s #DirtyLaundry short (scroll past for the video) took Thomas Jane and put him back into the Punisher’s outfit. In 10 minutes, this independent filmmaker was able to take Thomas Jane’s Punisher and make it him truer to the source material moreso than the entire Punisher film from 2004. It even featured a cameo from Ron Perlman (Pacific Rim, Hellboy) and created a vivid, violent film that I love watching.

This year, the same director, Adi Shankar, brought forth another short film with a surprising appearance by a classic Marvel villain, Venom. Titled #TruthInJournalism, we follow a journalism crew that consists of Eddie Brock and we all know how that ends with him. Watch the gritty film below and pay attention for another Marvel character that pops up along the way, oh and in true Marvel fashion, there is an after credits sequence.

New Thor: The Dark World Poster

0

Next up today we get an awesome Thor: The Dark World poster to start of August. From here, we get a look at all the major players in the film; including Thor, Loki, Jane Foster, Sif, Odin, Malekith, the warriors three, and some dark elves. Bask in this poster that is burdened with glorious purpose and take note, my friends. There are hints and information in this poster that we will find out throughout the film, on that is already in plain sight. The most obvious is an unscarred Malekith, which I assume we’ll find out in the film. Another is…more spoilerish. Let us wait and see.

To coincide with this poster and the beginning of major marketing for Thor, speculation is that a trailer will be released next week in theaters. If it is anything like the footage shown at SDCC, then there will be plenty of gasps had by all. Despite many opinions thinking Thor was the weakest Phase 1 film (I think it was one of the most important to lead to Avengers), will you be going to see his second outing in theaters this November?

Bryan Singer Tweets Sentinels On-set

0

The same week Trask Industries begins its viral marketing campaign for Days of Future Past, Bryan Singer tweets (no surprise) a photo of a sentinel on set. Let me say that I am truly astonished at the size of this thing, despite the ones from the cartoons in the 90’s being much larger. I expected sentinels to be either human/mutant sized or towering beasts. What we got was something in between, but still looks awesome. Notice the translucent covering around the body and that purple is slick. The right arm has what appears to be a gun on it, so expect some violence from these machines in the film.

This doesn’t dissuade my initial fears of over crowding mutants into a film, nor the large number of stars (they’ll never achieve what the Avengers did), but it makes me have a nerd-gasm so hard.
