Benicio Del Toro Cast in Guardians of the Galaxy

1

In the third round of casting news for Guardians of the Galaxy, it has been confirmed that Benicio Del Toro (Snatch, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) has joined the Phase 2 Marvel film in an unspecified role. Although the specifics on his character are currently unknown, it is reported he has been cast in a role that will play a larger part in the Marvel cinematic universe, meaning a multi-picture deal will be struck with the actor.

Theories from fans around the internet have already cast him as Thanos, which would not be a stretch. I say this due to his make-up and cg experiences in such films as Sin City, another comic book adaptation, and the remake of The Wolfman. As a serious faced character with deep lines and a grizzled feel, putting purple makeup on him and making him the Mad Titan is a thought.

However, I did not immediately think villain. Since the casting of Glenn Close as a Nova Corps leader, we’re going to need to see some Nova Corps members, most notably Richard Rider as Earth’s Nova. Being a member of an older incarnation of the Guardians and through interactions with the Avengers on Earth, I could see an older, rougher version of Nova who is battle weary and appears in later Marvel films as a cosmic hero. The deal to appear in later Marvel films might mean we get to see a Nova film later that focuses on the Corps and the training of a younger replacement, much in the vain of Men In Black but in Space!

Despite the theories either way, Benicio Del Toro is a great addition to a cast that is shaping up to be the most diverse group yet. Here’s to the Rocket Racoon!

James McAvoy as Professor Serpico, I mean Xavier.

In case the image of Fassbender and McAvoy walking to set were misleading yesterday, here is an earlier image tweeted by Bryan Singer that showcases a long haired, bearded Xavier in one of the original versions of his famous wheelchair. Take a look at the groovy pattern on his shirt and those tight brown pants. I’m really hoping their Corduroy, ya know, for less wind resistance. Take a look at this outfit and notice it matches up with those images from yesterday and we can put two and two together and assume the image of him walking is just to/from the set.

Directed by Bryan Singer on the X-men story Days of Future Past written by Chris Claremont, the Fox film’s cast also includes Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Michael Fassbender, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, Peter Dinklage, Daniel Cudmore, Adan Canto, Evan Peters, and Fan Bingbing.

The Winter Soldier All Summer Long

0

Hot on the heels of all the Guardians of the Galaxy’s casting news and X-men’s set photos, we get a little hint at the title character in the upcoming sequel to Marvel’s Captain America, the Winter Soldier. We have a picture of the Winter Soldier himself.

Potential spoilers may follow if you happen to be unfamiliar with the Winter Soldier storyline from Ed Brubaker’s run on the Captain America comics. Read on at your own discretion.

[toggle_simple title=”Spoilers and Image (Click to expand)” width=”Width of toggle box”]

The Winter Soldier is a storyline that brings back Captain America’s longtime friend and ally Bucky Barnes, as a brainwashed assassin who is working for the Russian government. This ties the Black Widow back into the story as she is of Russian descent. Taking a few hints from the movie, I speculate that when Bucky fell off the train near the climax of the movie, he fell into the snowy mountain side, freezing his body much like Steve’s. However, in the comics and in the movie, his left arm will have been replaced by a bionic/metal one that is stronger and very capable of super human feats.

After being discovered by the Russians, Bucky is trained to be a skilled assassin, on par with Captain America and the Widow herself. If you look closely at the picture, you can tell the Winter Soldier (NOT the New Goblin from Spider-man 3, despite the ironic resemblance) does indeed have a metal arm and is using a modern weapon with a grenade attachment. At first I thought it was simply a paintball player on set, but an assassin wouldn’t need a large arsenal to do his job well.

Have a look at the picture and let the rumor mill commence as more details from the movie spill forth. Click the image for a closer view.

Fassbender, McAvoy and Dinklage In Costume

5
EXCLUSIVE: First look at Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy look groovy on new 'X-MEN Days of Future Past' set

Now I’ve seen it all. We have set photos of Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, and Peter Dinklage on the set of X-men: Days of Future Past. Now we’ve seen a photo of McAvoy in his famous X-chair, but the other two film powerhouses (this side of the future) have yet to be seen. Now we can view them in all their 70’s glory. Fassbender seems fairly normal compared to the other outfits and hairstyles. Sporting a clean shaven haircut and a denim shirt, don’t expect any radical changes from the mutant radical. McAvoy however has some locks of hair that challenge the future Xavier to his core, meaning theres more than enough for them to share so whys the future one have to go bald?

Lastly, we see Peter Dinklage as…no one knows. Word on the street is he is playing Bolivar Trask, creator and proponent of the sentinels. What we do get is one of the largest mustaches this side of the Mississippi river. I’d liken him to a miniature Ron Burgandy, but i’m not sure who would be more offended? Well, take a look for yourselves and get excited for what could be the biggest X-men movie yet.

Glenn Close is a Guardian of the Galaxy

2

In a surprise casting news, it has been confirmed that Glenn Close has joined the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie directed by James Gunn. Word through the grapevine is that she’ll play the leader of the Nova Corps. Nova, a character who was at one point associated with the Guardians, is a Marvel NOW character who can be seen in his own issues of Nova and on the Ultimate Spider-man TV show as a frenemy of Spider-man. The Nova Corps however, is military space exploration and militia that is from the planet Xandar. Although I don’t expect seeing a film version of the 616 Nova any time soon, the acknowledgement of the Corps is definitely a huge step in filling out the Marvel Galactic Universe.

Glenn Close is known for her resume of acting jobs that include 101 Dalmatians, Mars Attacks, Air Force One, and Albert Nobbs, as well as her role on the award winning FX drama Damages. This kind of star power is very similar to the casting of Robert Redford in the upcoming Captain America: The Winter Soldier. I would personally portray Close as a character actor, and will be more than capable of bringing a comic book character to full realization on the big screen.

Glenn Close joins Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Michael Rooker, Ophelia Lovibond and Lee Pace in the last Phase 2 Marvel film before Avengers 2. Most likely remembered as space Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy will follow Starlord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Groot, and Rocket Racoon in August 2014.

Marvel Heroes Preview

1

Marvel Heroes has been a game that I’ve adamantiumly (pun intended) been pushing since I heard of its creation a year ago. As a free-to-play MMO that uses Marvel characters, I cannot express my enthusiasm. Now as we approach the middle of 2013, a final release date has been revealed and the final code pushed to the beta testers, yours truly included! Plugging into the server this past Saturday, I was greeted with a message saying it was required to uninstall Marvel Heroes and redownload the new client. Happily, I obliged and several hours later (it is a large game) I was met with a Play button. Ironically, the launcher page is extremely similar to Diablo 3 so if you’re familiar with that updater and launcher, then you will be more than at home here. Another great feature is the ability to play the game before the entire download has been completed. This means it will download in the background as you play, but no need to wait forever to start up the MMO goodness that is Marvel Heroes.

When I started the new version, I was met with something almost tragic, my previous characters had been removed and I had to start over with the beginner choices. They include Hawkeye, The Thing, Storm, Daredevil, and Scarlet Witch. If any of you know me, then you’d know my immediate decision was Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch. She is one of my favorite characters and definitely a staple in the Marvel Universe since her introduction in X-men #4. As the game begins, you start off in the Raft (another Marvel video game tentpole) as you fight your way through against Hydra agents who have released villains from their prison. The gameplay portions are bookended with motion comic style animatics done by the fantastic guys over at Marvel Knights Animation that follow a story written by Brian Michael Bendis. Now, if you’ve been following the variables given here, you’d know this game is already starting off at a great pace for my standards.

The gameplay style is an isometric view clicker. By that, the game is essentially Diablo with Marvel Characters. Yes, the game has been created by Diablo 1 and 2 designer David Brevik. He has been heading the production of Marvel Heroes at Gazillion entertainment from the get go. Using the Unreal 3 engine, the game on highest settings is absolutely beautiful and smooth. The hex bolts and hex blobs I cast with a left and a right click are full realized as they tear into the masses of Hydra, AIM, and street thugs who willingly run into my fists. Also impressive are the subtle features, such as when my character lifts up a car with her hex magic and it floats as she aims it around the screen.

As of right now, my biggest complaint is the compatibility of the game. The game and client are currently only available for Windows PCs, however at C2E2, I personally asked Brevik of the availability of a Mac client. He responded that since he personally uses a Mac in the office and the final game code is finishing up, a Mac version has been pushed to the forefront of production! This excites me, as I truly despise Windows 8 and boot camp all at the same time.

Lastly, for non-founders, the release date is…June 4! So get your clicking fingers ready and prepare to loot the Marvel Universe as one of your favorite characters as the date draws ever closer. Characters playable at release will be as follows: Black Panther, Black Widow, Cable, Captain America, Colossus, Cyclops, Daredevil, Deadpool, Hawkeye, Hulk, Iron Man, Jean Grey, Ms. Marvel, Punisher, Rocket Raccoon, Scarlet Witch, Spider-man, Storm, The Thing, Thor and Wolverine. Other characters that will be released include: Emma Frost, Human Torch, Luke Cage, Nova, and Squirrel Girl, with more to come in the future.

Stay tuned as I upload some screenshots and let you Marvel (pun) in the awesomeness that will be Free-to-play.

Avengers Assemble Free on iTunes

0

This coming Sunday we get the pleasure (I really hope) of seeing Marvel’s newest animated series, Avengers Assemble. Anyone familiar with Marvel’s animated series will know that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes (RIP) was canceled to be replaced with this new series that falls in line with the Ultimate Spider-man show that is currently on Season 2 on Disney XD. However, this is neither a continuation or a reboot of the previous series, but rather set in the movie universe with the same team plus the Falcon. I can’t say I’m impressed with the artwork direction just yet, but hopefully they can sway me with some awesome story telling, like EMH had. The loss of that show still stings a bit, but I digress.

In honor of the premiere, you can go ahead and get the first episode on iTunes for free! Check it out over on Marvel’s Avengers Assemble iTunes page and let us know what you think. Its free and you have a 3 day weekend, so I expect reviews by Monday night.

Iron Man joins Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Hawkeye, Black Widow and Falcon as they assemble to fight the foes no single Super Hero could withstand! Now, they must battle a team comprised of the planet’s most dangerous villains, The Cabal, a group joined together under the leadership of The Red Skull!

News Flash: Quicksilver Joins X-men

1

In a surprise, twist announcement today via twitter (as usual), Bryan Singer didn’t surprise the world with another picture from the upcoming X-men: Days of Future Past set but instead announced a new character to the X-men universe. Not necessarily someone comic fans aren’t familiar with, but someone we’ve not seen on the SILVER screen before (bad pun intended). As of today, Evan Peters (American Horror Story) has been cast as Quicksilver in Days of Future Past. Quicksilver is one of Magneto’s children with the ability to be extremely fast. How and why? Thats still up in the air, but every day I feel this is an X3 issue waiting to happen. By that, I mean too many mutants and not enough character.

The story revolves around a future where sentinels rule the world because of a senator’s assassination from the Brotherhood of Mutants, forcing surviving X-men in the future to time travel back and prevent it. However, we now know that there are 2 Xaviers, 2 Magnetos, most of the X2 cast (Wolverine, Storm, Iceman, Rogue, Kitty Pryde, Colossus) and the First Class mutants (Mystique, Beast). Then add in some new mutants (Bishop, Quicksilver) and we already get confused. Lets hope this is done right and Michael Fassbender steals the show.

This news also follows Joss Whedon’s announcement that Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch (Magneto’s children) will be in Avengers 2. Yes, they can exist in both movie worlds. No, they will not be the same actors. Marvel can use the characters as Avengers without saying that they are mutants. For an example, read Ultimates 2. Fox can use the characters as mutants, but never refer to their Avengers roles, which were quite huge. This will be interesting to see 2 versions of the same character be played out on screen.

What do you think?

Jennifer Lawrence Blue Herself

0

Like clockwork, Bryan Singer tweets more and more picture of behind the scenes happenings on the set of X-men: Days of Future Past. The newest picture showcases up and coming actress Jennifer Lawrence in her Mystique costume. To all those perverts out there, you may notice that this costume is different than the last. Mystique will be wearing a full body suit instead of body painting, allowing the actress an easier time to get into/out of the costume. Closer observation also shows that she has lost some weight since the last time we’ve seen her and is looking better and better. Rebecca Romijn better’d look out. Check out the picture below.

The Fox film’s cast also includes Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Michael Fassbender, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, Peter Dinklage, Daniel Cudmore, Adan Canto, and Fan Bingbing.

Full Trailer for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

0

The most recent news to come out of Marvel’s cinematic universe has been along the lines of the television series, Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD. This comes as no surprise as ABC gave Joss Whedon of Avengers fame the helm to write and direct the pilot of the series, which has been confirmed as picked up as a TV show premiering this fall. Agents shows the return of Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson who supposedly died in the Avengers, as well as a new team of younger, hip SHIELD agents.

Watch the trailer at this link and stay tuned as we bring you all the updates on what’s shaping up to be my favorite show this year.
