Games With Gold: Defense Grid: The Awakening

1

Free stuff. Thats all you had to say, and while technically you pay monthly for Xbox LIVE Gold subscription, a normally $10 game for free is not a bad deal at all. Considering yearly I pay approximately $50 for my Gold account, standard is around $60 at full price and online stores always sell codes at less than face value.

That brings me to Microsoft and Xbox’s “Games With Gold” promo! Teased earlier this year, Games With Gold is the idea that Xbox/Microsoft will be giving you free games to everyone with Gold LIVE subscriptions. Future titles include Halo 3 and Assassin’s Creed II, which is a complete turn around from the past 8 years. About a month ago I was honestly thinking of canceling my Gold account for the first time since I got it, prior to the 360. My blu-ray player can do my Netflix at no cost, and I haven’t played an online match in over 6 months. So the day after I decided I would not renew this year, Microsoft threw this chunk of change at us and I decided to keep on trucking, even through my Xbox One days that lie ahead.

Last month’s game was Fable 3, full version for free. Which I immediately hopped on day and date, which I now apologize for not posting on ComicUI, but this was prior to our Video Games section. This month, July 2013, we have been given Defense Grid: The Awakening.

[alert variation=”alert-info”]Defense Grid: The Awakening is the definitive Tower Defense Strategy game that’s easy to pick up, engrossing to play, and hard to set down. Strategically place your towers on the map to prevent alien enemies from stealing your power cores.[/alert]

All you Xbox LIVE Gold Subscribers should jump on this offer while its good. You can download it by signing into your account on an Xbox 360 or by clicking HERE. You’re welcome!

Adan Canto as Sunspot in X-men?

1

Ok, this is getting crazy. How many X-men are we going to see in Days of Future Past and when will these announcements ever stop?!? The latest to join the Bryan Singer fox film is Adan Canto, known for his role on The Following television show on Fox. He posted a vague hint of his character on Twitter stating “I might turn into a ball of fire if someone pisses me off.” Now this could be any number of pyrokinetic mutants in the Marvel universe. However, the top two contenders were Sunspot and Sunfire. Either way, not many people are going to recognize the difference in either one.

Later after this social media mystery was posted, we got another bit of fun information in a response to a fan’s tweet that said “”I’m excited for @adancanto as Sunspot!!” In a quick response, Mr. Canto responded “Thanks! Next summer.” This wouldn’t have much credit to it, due to the similarity of names or his enthusiasm to respond to fan tweets, regardless of the included character name. The real icing on the cake was the deletion of the tweet almost immediately after. This leads me to speculate 2 things. 1. The fan in question was correct! or 2. The fan was wrong and he realized the mistake after the fact.

Well, now we’re in a conundrum to speculate which fire-based character Adan Canto will be playing, but most rumors are leaning towards Sunspot, pictured above. Who is the newest mutant joining Days of Future Past that you’re most excited for?

ComicUI ReEvolution

2

Welcome patrons and friends to ComicUI! If you’re reading this, you’ve probably been here before a few times to check out some articles and leave your thoughts on some of your favorite posts. Also, I’d like to point out our title is NOT a typo, but a concept Marvel Comics uses itself, and something we would like to try and follow. Today, we’d like to welcome you to our new look, which we’re uncreatively dubbing 2.0.

From here, you may notice a new color scheme, some fancier buttons, and a lot of different ways to access our content like never before. A quick break down of some of the more ‘hidden’ features include: Breaking slider is collapsible, via blue box in upper right; Login and Register are now in the Favorites slider; ComicUI now looks better than ever on your mobile device due to the responsive web code; Commenting is now easier with the addition Twitter/Facebook; and lastly, all posts can be ‘liked’ with the heart icon on each page, which is accessible via the homepage or individual posts (so like them all!).

With that being said, we applied this new look early so you can enjoy all the posts you want with ease and beauty. However, some of the older code is still hanging around old posts, so as we get through all those, it’ll all be up to date. Please ignore our mess and feel free to report any errors on posts in the comments section or to me!

Lastly, enjoy this beautiful piece of work that also doubles as our facebook banner. It uses the Builder Code from Avengers v5 series that is currently being released through Marvel comics. The other mastermind behind ComicUI, Brian, has created an entire font from the Builder Code and I’m sure he’ll be more than happy to release it here sooner than later if you want to have some fun with it too. Until then, keep calm and ComicUI.

Marvel and Disney finally have a date for when you die-hards can bring Iron Man 3 home with you. If you’re a collector like me, the DVD and Blu-ray combo pack (with digital copy of course) will be hitting the streets on September 24. It’ll make a sweet addition to my collection of Marvel Films. You can expect the 3D Blu-ray to hit the same day too. Now here’s the fun part, the digital version of Iron Man 3 will be available…September 3! So for all you who want to rent or own a soft copy of the film can get it a full 3 weeks earlier than those losers like me. This is the first I’ve heard of this on a mainstream film, but I’m not complaining. The more who see it, the happier I am.

S.H.I.E.L.D.’s HQ in The Winter Soldier

1

I think Captain America’s filming has been a success for internet marketing. They’re filming a lot of the movie outside in Ohio and we have seen more set photos than you can shake a stick at, and Marvel never even paid a dime. With all these visual cues that showcase a ton of the action and costumes, its the little details that we fail to pay attention to. Somewhere throughout the filming near the Lorain Ave bridge, a crew member was stating that the bridge was going to be used as the main bridge to S.H.I.E.L.D.’s headquarters, the Triskelion. This is where I start geeking out about that name.

The Triskelion is the island/building that is used in Marvel’s Ultimate Universe comics to house the Ultimates and S.H.I.E.L.D. at the same time. Since many of the Marvel films have taken their queues from the Ultimate U, to see this building exist in real life (in the movie) would be awesome, even if Samuel L. Jackson/Nick Fury is living there. Most people assume the Helicarrier is the main place everything goes down, but not in the Ultimate Universe. They also house villains there in a prison, so its always getting blown up. Every year, at least once. Lets hope they keep up the tradition!

The meaning of “triskelion” is three bodies intertwining together to form a singular shape, much like the founding Ultimates/Avengers: Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man. However, I feel in The Winter Soldier we’ll see Captain America, the Black Widow, and the Falcon come together to defeat evil. Even if theres no real symbol or metaphor to the actual meaning, I just wanna see the base next April!

Dr. Strange and The Mysterious Movie Rumors

1

Stephen Strange, also a famed neurosurgeon, so lets call him Doctor, is a Marvel character that is gaining a lot of traction. Why, you may ask, is simply because he may be taking to the silver screen sooner than later. Are you unfamiliar with Doctor Strange? Well be prepared to swoon over him as an undisclosed source has stated that “…Strange is being groomed to be the next Iron Man. The studio needs a new ‘hub’ character going into Phase 3 and beyond, as there is audience fatigue, aging stars and a need to move from Tony Stark/Iron Man as a ‘hub’ for films.” This is hot on the heels of news that the plot of the movie has been leaked to Latino-Review.

Without divulging too much (just in case SPOILERS), I’ll give you a run down on the villains who may be making an appearance. First up, Dormammu, a demon lord of another dimension that is equivalent a mystic hell. A staple in Doctor Strange’s side (surgery joke!) since his appearance in Strange Tales #126, Dormammu has always been looking for ways to crack into our dimension and take it over. Secondly, there is a rumored Baron Mordo as well, another familiar villain from the Strange series. He was being trained in the mystic arts, along with Stephen, from the Ancient one. When Strange was chosen to be the next Sorcerer supreme, Mordo decided to turn evil and use his powers for evil. Nothing like a spurned lover. Both of these characters can be seen in the Doctor Strange animated film, definitely a must if you want to get a basic overview of the character and his background. I feel the live action film will be drawing heavily from it. And lastly, the Mindless Ones will be the generic antagonists to the film, much like the Destroyer in Thor. They come from an alternate dimension and are at the whim of their master, which I’ll presume will be Mordo or Dormammu. This is not apparent from the cartoon film.

Doctor Strange is the rumored front runner of Marvel’s Phase 3 undisclosed films. This is pretty bold, considering the leading film is Ant-man, both a B-list characters. This duo will supposedly be joined by the Inhumans and Black Panther, all four films containing none of the Marvel Universe staples we have come to know and love. However, the only confirmed film is Ant-man at this time, but we have heard a TON of news about Doctor Strange.

Do you think we need more ‘magic’ in the Marvel Universe? I’m thinking yes.

Deadpool Video Game Release Reminder

2

Deadpool the video game is out tomorrow, June 25. Full of third person violence, humor, and fourth wall breaking that will leave you wanting more. I can’t say I’m gonna purchase this one out the gate, but through hell or high water, I’m gonna Redbox it this weekend. You can probably hear my review and reactions this coming weekend if you’re around. Until then enjoy this dubstep and action heavy release trailer for the best Wade Wilson video game yet.

Disney Dates Marvel Mystery Films

1

Disney has been hard at work planning out Marvel Studio’s future films. What we have are some Phase 3 release dates for undefined films for the upcoming few years. Starting off post Avengers 2 films is Ant-man on November 6, 2015. That is a pretty stellar choice to lead with a relative unknown Marvel hero for Phase 3. Hank Pym or Scott Lang or both! Either way, I expect us to see shrinking to very small sizes and hopefully lots of humor from Edgar Wright. From here, the path is less defined on super heroes, but more clear cut on when we can see some. The next three lined up as of today are: May 6, 2016; July 8, 2016; and May 5, 2017. To be fair, the May dates were announced before Sony decided to plan out Spider-man until 2018, but thats still quite a bit into the future from now.

I like that Marvel has a plan and Disney isn’t afraid to tout off one of its stronger properties right now. Mind you, Disney isn’t taking over either. They’re just giving resources and juice to the powerhouse that has given us such gems as Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, and Avengers. My next question is, how do they proceed from here? Will we see the presumed Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Inhumans, Namor, or dare I think Sentry!? Or is one of them a guaranteed Avengers 3 spot, with a Thor and Captain America trilogy ends? I’m hoping Marvel goes forward and expands on their universe to tales yet untold.

Who do you think will make the silver screen appearance in Phase 3? Excelsior!

Fox moves X-men Sequel Up

1

In a whirlwind day of events, Fox has moved around several of its upcoming films, including the release date of X-men: Days of Future Past. Originally scheduled to be released on July 18, 2014, the film has been moved up to May 23 instead! This is great news, especially since all the images from the film’s production have been leaked all over the internet and then some. This makes me a bit more excited for the film’s release as well, knowing it is that much closer.

However, to get that slot, 20th Century Fox had to move Dawn of the Planet of the Apes from May 23 to the July 18 slot, which honestly, doesn’t bother me too much. I attempted to watch all of the Planet of the Ape films and sequels back in college, only to find myself more bored than intrigued. The newest film has gotten above average reviews, however I have failed to push myself into a mentality to see it. No sweat off my back there.

Other big news from the studio include the announced release date of Independence Day 2, the sequel to the hit Roland Emmerich original from the 90’s. Apparently there is enough desire for a continuation of the story that it must be told, and we can check out the movie on July 3, 2015. Not quite the Independence Day we want, but its the one we get.

Lastly, the Assassin’s Creed film staring Michael Fassbender (hottie) has been pushed back from May 22, 2015 to June 19, 2015. A whole month for a movie based on a video game. History shows us that this usually isn’t a good sign, however, we may be able to get something from the actor who has been in high profile movies (X-men, Shame) and the story of Assassin’s Creed, which has spawned at least 4 games if not more by this point.

Which move are you most excited for? I’ll be at them all, probably.

Robert Downey Jr. Confirmed for Avengers 2 and 3

1

Via FirstShowing.net, we have learned that Robert Downey Jr. and Marvel Studios have come to an agreement on his future role as Tony Stark. Through some Hollywood passive-aggressiveness, we have learned that the stars for all Marvel films have all been low-balled when it comes to their contracts for multiple films. However, Downey (the highest paid actor of the movies) has been at the forefront of leading a change in policy to get more money for the cast of the films, including Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth, two very under appreciated actors in my opinion. Through what I assume is some very ‘hostile negotiations,’ RDJ has been confirmed to grace us with his present in the two planned Avengers sequels.

It is important to note that Iron Man 4 was not included in that agreement. Perhaps things will change by the time that movie is scheduled, but for the time being, we may have to admit these could be the last times we see RDJ as our favorite iron avenger. Kevin Feige, producer of most Marvel films, has admitted that Tony Stark could be like James Bond. The recasting of the character is much like a different artist taking over a comic book. The character remains, the story continues, and we don’t need another origin story.

On that note, I’d like to remind everyone of the remaining upcoming Marvel films. Phase 2 will be filled in with Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, and then the Avengers 2 (written and directed by Joss Whedon again!). Phase 3 has confirmed the existence Ant-Man leading the new movies, but when I heard Stan Lee back in May, he also mentioned The Black Panther, Doctor Strange, and the Inhumans. If this is any indication, Phase 3 may already be full leading up to the Avengers 3. In that scenario, Iron Man 4 may be much later than sooner. In any case, we have a lot to look forward to until that fateful day comes.
