The biggest worry for everyone this year isn’t politics or global catastrophes, but rather the casting of Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man for future films, most specifically Avengers 2. Joss Whedon however is showing his iron will when it comes to keeping RDJ as Tony Stark for his next big piece. At this point it is unclear how negotiations will go over the next year before filming starts, but I have so much faith in his return it would be considered unhealthy.
In Whedon’s interview with The Daily Beast, “He is Iron Man. He is Iron Man in the way that Sean Connery was James Bond. I have no intention of making Avengers 2 without him, nor do I think I’ll be called upon to do that. I don’t think it’s in my interest, Marvel’s interest, or his interest, and I think everything will be fine.”
Adding later, “But I know that this is Hollywood and you roll with things. You have to be ready for the unexpected. But I loved working with Robert, and everybody knows he embodied that role in a way no one else can. The day he was cast, I went up to [Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige and said, ‘You brilliant son of a bitch.’”
And if you didn’t read that in Joss’ voice, then shame on you. Lets hope they work out a price that everyone can agree on and make Avengers 2 another great piece of Marvel history.
