D’Onofrio to be Kingpin for Marvel

0

Marvel is rounding out its cast for its first Netflix outing, Daredevil. With the series set to air in 2015, we’ve gotten confirmation that Charlie Cox will be locked down as Matt Murdock/Daredevil. Now we know who the blind lawyer will be squaring off against in the show.

Vincent D’Onofrio (Men in Black; Full Metal Jacket) has been cast as Wilson Fisk, aka the Kingpin. Previously portrayed by the late Michael Clarke Duncan in 2003’s Daredevil attempt, I feel we’ll finally get the Kingpin we deserve in 13 episodes, rather than a brief taste as before.

We personality think this was a great casting choice and will truly bring the character to life next year. Production on the series starts this summer and the series will hit Netflix in 2015. We’ll provide you updates as they arrive!

Best known for his critically-lauded work in “Law & Order: Criminal Intent,” “Men in Black, “Full Metal Jacket” and “Homicide,”  D’Onofrio will play Wilson Fisk, a powerful businessman whose interests in the future of Hell’s Kitchen will bring him into conflict with the blind attorney Matt Murdock and his alter ego Daredevil.D’Onofrio joins Charlie Cox, previously announced as Matt Murdock, in the exciting cast of “Marvel’s Daredevil.”

“We’re incredibly proud to have an actor with the gravitas and versatility of Vincent joining ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’ in such an integral role,” said Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s Head of Television. “Wilson Fisk is an iconic villain whose cunning and power make him the dangerous equal of our hero.”

“Marvel’s Daredevil” follows the journey of Matt Murdock, who was blinded as a young boy but imbued with extraordinary senses, now fighting against injustice by day as a lawyer, and by night as the super hero Daredevil in modern day Hell’s Kitchen, New York City.

ANT-MAN Sizes Up New Director

0

The sudden departure of Edgar Wright from Marvel’s upcoming ANT-MAN was unexpected and surprising for people who had already counted their eggs before they’d hatched. Despite me being ok and actually pleased with him leaving the film, the next question was who could pick up the pieces and get a solid movie made on time?

Marvel has hired Peyton Reed as the director for ANT-MAN, Marvel’s newest property after GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. The film will still be released in July 2015 and retains the same cast. Reed is known for his films such as Yes Man, The Break Up, and Bring It On. While this may seem like quite an eclectic set of works, it gives us an idea of perhaps the tone of ANT-MAN.

Along with this, it has been announced that Adam McKay, frequent Will Ferrell collaborator, has been hired as a contributor for the film’s script. Once in the running for director of Ant-Man post-Wright, it’ll be interesting to see what he brings to comic book movies.

Lastly, Marvel has given us a first tease of the film’s story and it goes as such:

Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.

With Reed now directing and McKay helping write, it sounds like Ant-Man may become a buddy-heist type comedy film, which is then later inject with the comic book layers. Much like The Winter Soldier is a political thriller that fits in the Marvel Cinematic Universe,

We’ll be updating you with all of the confirmed ANT-MAN news as it arrives, especially now with a director in place, we can expect the filming to begin shortly.

New TV Spot and Fan Poster for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

0

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY has less than 2 months till it hits theaters, so that means promotions are about to ramp up in full force. From the early reviews we reported yesterday to the newest TV spots, expect a bombardment of Guardians material.

Today, we have the newest TV spot for the film which will air tonight during the NBA Finals. It doesn’t give us much new footage, but a few action shots and Glenn Close telling us to “Send in the Guardians.” Check out the full trailer below!

On top of that, a new poster by Matt Ferguson (@Cakes_Comic) has been tweeted by director James Gunn. The unsanctioned artwork has the Guardians pay homage to the original Star Wars posters of yesteryear. Its really sleek and would make a fine addition to anyone’s home. You can find it below!

Initial GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Review (May Contain Spoilers)

0

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is the second Marvel Studios movie to hit theaters this year and we honestly can’t wait. August 1 will herald the arrival of Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Drax, and Gamora, as well as bolster the galactic presence of Marvel’s films. Two months can’t pass by fast enough!

Just to make us jealous, some early reviewers have seen a pre-release version of Guardians already. The graphics aren’t complete and the film can still be tweaked in these summer months, but that doesn’t mean they won’t give us a good indication of how the film is tracking.

Before you proceed any further, please understand the following thoughts are from Latino Review and are not the feelings we here at ComicUI share (yet). If you don’t wait the movie to be spoiled for you, don’t proceed, however, there aren’t revealing details. Enjoy!

MAJOR SPOILERS if you click on the source link below. YOU have been WARNED!

[alert variation=”alert-info”]I love Marvel movies, but I was scared to see this because I was worried it was going to be bad. The movie is in a tough position because it is full of unknown characters it has to introduce together (unlike every other MCU origin stories which only had to focus on showcasing one character), it’s got some really goofy space/animal elements to balance, and it has to set up Thanos and the Infinity Gems which will obviously be a huge corner stone of the MCU. Not only that, but James Gunn is a risky bet. I loved Slither and his PG Porn series, but I was disappointed by Super and the Scooby movies. Mix both those elements together, a complicated movie that needs to bend in a lot of directions and a hit/miss writer and director, and what do you get?
A great movie, as it turns out. Granted, the effects aren’t done and a lot can change between now and August, but if they keep on the track they’re going, it will be solid. I don’t want to spoil the fun, so here are few things that surprised me:

  • Unlike any other Marvel movie. A lot more comedic than expected.
  • Ronan, Nebula and Yondu look amazing.
  • The prison escape sequence is brilliant.
  • As expected, lots of neat easter eggs in The Collector’s collection, including a cosmic puppy.
  • Rocket steals the show. Bradley Cooper’s voice is perfect.
  • But that doesn’t mean the others don’t shine – they do, especially Drax. I was impressed with how well you knew most of the characters by the end.
  • The soundtrack plays a huge part, both in the setting tone and being part of the story.
  • You find out where Peter Quill and the team get their names.

Bottom line: it’s not perfect. There are parts that drag, some action sequences that aren’t as strong as one might hope, and some puzzling/unexplained motivations. The good news is that there’s time to fix these things and, even if they don’t solve everything, it’ll still be a lot of fun. No matter what, I will absolutely be in line to go see it opening day.

Director Hired for Doctor Strange

1

We all knew it was inevitable. DOCTOR STRANGE will be (very likely) one of the Phase 3 Marvel films and they’ve reportedly cast a director for it already. Variety and other sources are saying Scott Derrickson (Sinister, The Exorcism of Emily Rose) has been picked as the director for the Sorcerer Supreme.

Nearly one year ago, we reported that Doctor Strange was in the works at Marvel and we should see it in Phase 3. Now that Marvel/Disney has 2 untitled Marvel film slots for July 8th, 2016 and May 5, 2017, we should expect one of them to be taken by the film.

The list of credits for Derrickson include tons of supernatural remakes and horror films which lend credence to the rumor. If that wasn’t enough, he took to his twitter to post something cryptic and revealing. If you remember our Secrets of the Winter Soldier article, you’ll notice that one of the names dropped in that film were Stephen Strange. It was no accident either.

Check the image below and let us know if you’re ready for Marvel to delve into the mystical.

Josh Brolin to Voice Thanos

0

Latino Review is hot on point this week. After first breaking that Marvel had cast Daredevil, they are not saying that Josh Brolin (Men In Black 3; No Country for Old Men) will be lending his voice to GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY as none other than Thanos himself. First seen at the end of Avengers, Thanos has always been alluded to be the main villain behind the assumed Avengers trilogy. With the infinity stones being mentioned in Thor: The Dark World, we knew that Guardians of the Galaxy had to have some larger Thanos input than any other movie.

Since the movie is in post-production, don’t expect the actor to be Thanos in the film a la green screen/cgi. We assume this is his voice only and will be added over the actual footage.

If you’ve read the Guardian’s prequel comic, you’ll know that Thanos raised both Nebula (Karen Gillen) and Gamora (Zoe Saldana) to be assassins. We know he’ll make an appearance in the upcoming Marvel film (but not the extent), but we now know he’ll be speaking. With several other huge names attached to the cast, Josh Brolin would only make it another.

We can only assume at this point he’ll also be the character in the inevitable Avengers 3 film when it happens.

Do you think Jonah Hex is the right man to portray the Mad Titan on screen?

UPDATE: The Wrap has confirmed Latino Review’s scoop, and echoed Variety’s note that Josh Brolin will also appear in Avengers: Age of Ultron next year. However, despite the many characters already in Joss Whedon’s upcoming Avengers sequel, The Wrap adds that Thanos “will have a more prominent role” in that film than he does in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Zero One-Shots for THE WINTER SOLDIER

0

After reporting the extra features on the upcoming CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER home release today, we have confirmation from Ryan Penagos (AgentM on twitter) that there will not be a One-Shot included with the home release. This may come as a surprise, as the recent One-Shots have only been increasing in quality (including a redemption of sorts for Trevor Slattery), ultimately resulting in two television shows from their stories. With Agents of SHIELD resulting from Coulson’s One-Shots and Item 47 and an entire TV series developed around Agent Carter, we’re really surprised to see the lack of mini-movies with the home releases.

On the flip side, we could see this as a sign Marvel is putting their eggs into several baskets at once and need to tone back the One-Shots. With two films produced a year, two TV series this fall, and four Netflix shows beginning production soon, thats a lot of Marvel Cinematic Universe at once. Sure, the One-Shots don’t take away from these, it would have been nice to see something related back to THE DARK WORLD other than the few SHIELD episodes.

Are you going to miss the One-Shots or do you think Marvel will change their mind before September?
