Ronan the Accuser Main Villain in Guardians (Thanos will be there too) [updated]

1

Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, has confirmed a few things about Guardians of the Galaxy today. First and foremost, that Ronan the Accuser, played by Lee Pace (The Hobbit trilogy), will in fact be the main antagonist in the film. This isn’t to say that Thanos doesn’t show up, but rules out the Collector as the big (biggest) bad. Of course we’ll also get Nebula portrayed by a bald Karen Gillan (Doctor Who) giving trouble at every chance possible.

“The general answer is yes,” Kevin Feige said when asked whether Guardians of the Galaxy takes place at the same time as Marvel’s other “Phase Two” movies, Iron Man 3Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier“It’s not exactly revealed what year or month it is in relation to the other Phase Two films. But yes, it’s the same time.” So, while it may take place at the same time, just how connected will it be to the aforementioned films? “Certainly more than the others. We’ve already said that Thanos plays a part in it and is a character in it. That in and of itself should tell you it’s connected to the other worlds.”

He also went on to add, “Ronan The Accuser is very much the main bad guy. And Thanos is lurking above it all. You will learn more about Thanos in Guardians, for sure. Certainly you’ll get more than the one turn around and smirk. You’ll get much more than that!”

There we have it, some more confirmation on the Antagonists of the Galaxy, in what I think will be the most fun Phase 2 Marvel film. We’ll know the final details next August when Guardians of the Galaxy opens galaxy wide.

UPDATE: More information from Feige’s interview with Empire magazine has surfaced, revealing individual backgrounds and motives for the characters.

[hero]”They are an unlikely band. It’s pure circumstance that brings them all together throughout the course of the movie. Rocket has been genetically and mechanically altered, he’s an experiment from one part of the galaxy. Groot is a species that happens to look like trees look, and is quite communicative if you can understand the different inflections in the way he says, “I am Groot.” Peter Quill left Earth in the mid’80s, but when we meet back up with him he’s very much a citizen of the universe. Drax has one goal and one goal only, which is to kill Ronan because of a past tragedy. When we meet Gamora, she’s a bad guy working with Ronan and Nebula and Korath, and by extension for Thanos. Gamora doesn’t necessarily like doing that anymore, and tries to find a new path for herself. But she has a reputation as the deadliest woman in the galaxy that people aren’t greeting her with open arms.”[/hero]

Mind Blowing News: Ben Affleck IS Batman

3

After a big list of potential rumors today, there was only the rumor that Christian Bale may be returning as Bruce Wayne in the upcoming Batman/Superman film in 2015. Little did we know Warner Bros had read my article and decided to set the news straight.

As of today, Warner Bros has announced that Ben Affleck is set to play Bruce Wayne/Batman in the new film, opposite Henry Cavill’s Superman.

Take that in for a minute, Ben Affleck of Gigli, Jersey Girl, and Dogma (thats an unfair assessment, honestly) will be the World’s Greatest Detective. I can’t comment or even begin to speculate on what this means or the implications, but needless to say I can’t even fathom it.

Do you think this casting choice is for shock value or is it another smart move in the right direction for the DC Film Franchise?

Disclaimer: Image is NOT Ben Affleck as Batman.

Buzz Kill – Rumors, Speculation, and Hearsay

2

Comic Book fans love to speculate, hell, that’s half my job/fun when trying to plan out where the movies or comic books are gonna go. It’s not so much as to spoil the ending but to see if I can think like the head honchos over at Marvel. If I can match them blow for blow, then perhaps I too could get there. Anyways, I get told a lot of movie casting and plot points in films from people throughout the day that they read on websites or someone posted on facebook or somewhere else. Sadly, 90% of these I have to shoot down due to lack of sources and the fact its mere “dream” casting, ideal actors for that role. Instead of debunking rumors left and right, let me put what rumors are currently circulating and what are/aren’t the known facts, so you can stick it to that annoying guy at work who always ‘knows everything.’

Vin Diesel as Groot – NOT confirmed. It is almost all but true, however Marvel nor Diesel has officially said the famous phrase “I am Groot” yet. Sure, we’d love to see (hear) the Riddick thespian voice over our favorite Ent-esque character in the Marvel U, but until we get a press release, this one is all hearsay. We all thought he was going to be The Vision for a while too.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Quicksilver – NOT confirmed. Yet again, we have a situation where the actor loves to talk to the press about a role he was offered, but never confirm he is in that position. Johnson can talk about Quicksilver with more ease and knowledge than most people I know, so that means he’s doing research, but until Avengers 2 starts filming next February, this one is just not confirmed yet.

Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon – NOT confirmed (at the time of this writing). This is the newest rumor to grace my presence. Theory on the street as of this morning say he has been offered the part to voice the gun-toting, foul mouthed critter, until his agent or Marvel’s says so, its rumor.

Elizabeth Olsen for Scarlet Witch – NOT confirmed. This week, word is it that Saoirse Ronan (Hanna, The Host) passed on the role for Scarlet Witch in the upcoming Avengers 2 film. No sooner than that word passed, we get word that the younger sister to the Olsen twins is being considered for the part. Mind you, out of the two actresses, I see this one being the most likely. She was heralded for her performance in Marcy Martha May Marlene and has a few big films coming out over the next year, making her a hot item by the time Age of Ultron hits the screen. Despite my hopes as of right now, no casting announcement has been made.

Simon Pegg up for Ant-Man – NOT true. To begin with, this story began when Pegg visited the Marvel offices and was posting pictures of himself with pictures and items from the Marvel U. There was one where he was pointing at Ant-Man among all of the various photos, which people took as a ‘sign’ he would be playing Ant-Man in Edgar Wright’s Phase 3 film. Sure, Pegg works with Wright a lot (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, At World’s End) but to make this assumption was idiotic on everyone’s part. You should all be ashamed! (Note: he could appear in the film, but not as the titular character)

Hugh Jackman offered $100 Million to act in 4 more films as Wolverine – NOT confirmed, but unlikely to be true. Coming off the success of The Wolverine this summer (one of my favorite comic book movies of 2013), and starring in Days of Future Past next year, Hugh Jackman has shown an affinity to play the clawed mutant, even 14 years after the first time he graced the set as the character. However, I don’t think he needs to be in 4 more films, especially as Jackman gets older (probably isn’t stopping him), but the studios could slow down and focus on their other, more popular characters first (Deadpool, Psylocke, X-23 could replace Wolverine even). Despite how sweet that number sounds, I really doubt it happened and that Jackman will agree to that kind of commitment, especially without any scripts in hand. (Note: Jeff Wadlow, director of Kick-Ass 2, is in fact writing a script for an X-Force film.)

Christian Bale offered $50 Million to return as Batman in next Batman/Superman film. NOT true. This is all coming from an unauthorized story of the making of the Batman films, in which someone stated “He could make $50 million being in the movie 20 minutes.” I also think that Nolan’s world does not exist within the Snyder-verse and therefore recasting Batman would destroy everything WB is trying to create, a stable, consistent universe for its DC comics films.

There you have it, all the known rumors as of today, and what do you know! They’re all unsubstantiated claims. Some of these casting announcements (especially the four Marvel films) may change as information becomes public and deals are set in stone, but until then it’s all just pillow talk.

New LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Trailer

1

Gamescom is going on this week out in Germany and if you don’t know what that is, imagine E3 but much larger. 250,000 attendees and tons of news. So big, even Sony announced the Playstation 4 release date (November 15, btw) and gave us a PS Vita price drop! That aside, we’re getting some great LEGO Marvel Super Heroes news as well, along with a pretty sweet trailer that feels reminiscent of the Avengers movie. Sadly, we were not treated to a release date of the game, only that it will be available Fall 2013.

Characters that I have not seen before, but have now been confirmed are Iceman, Daredevil, Ghost Rider, Professor X, Captain Britain, General Thunderbolt Ross, Doctor Octopus, Mister Fantastic, J Jonah Jameson, Red Hulk, and the Skrulls. Included in the footage is the Silver Surfer and stay till the end to get a shot of Galactus! From this footage, I see the character models look super shiny, but the humor is there and the Marvel characters retain every bit of personality that they have in the comics.

As a side note, it has been confirmed that LEGO Marvel Super Heroes will be a launch day game for the XBOX One (my preferred system), but I don’t see why it shouldn’t make it to PS4 too.

Watch the new trailer and let us know if you’re going to be buying this game on release day.

Extra X-Men Photos

1

Bryan Singer has released a ton of photos from the production of the next X-Men movie, Days of Future Past. We’ve followed those for a while now, posting the new and noteworthy (some weren’t even fun), but now that production on the film has wrapped, we got a few images over the weekend to share with you.

First up, we get Hank McCoy (Beast), Xavier, and Wolverine looking might snazzy in their 70’s attire, walking through the halls of Xavier’s school for the gifted. This location is visible in nearly every X-Men movie and leads to either the Danger Room or Cerebro (or both). Whats interesting to note is that McCoy is in his human form, despite how we left him at the end of First Class (previous photos from the set show he will be returning to fuzzy blue mode sometime).

Secondly, we have a few pieces of mutant artifacts, mostly from the First Class film. This would be similar to a museum piece, in which these items are imbued with importance. From left to right we get the coin Magneto sent through Shaw’s brain, Havoc’s body armor, one of Magneto’s helmets, and lastly, the wing from Angel Salvadore which was singed by one of Havoc’s blasts. Her absence from the upcoming movie seems to indicate something bad could have happened along the way.

Mutant Artifacts DOFP

Last, we have just a photo from when Days of Future Past officially ended production, showcasing Hugh Jackman, Bryan Singer, and a few other people I don’t recognize.. That’s really it, kinda boring, but fun to know the movie is wrapped!

Guardians of the Galaxy Star-Lord Spot

2

Guardians of the Galaxy footage was screened at SDCC 13 and D23 the past month and more bits and pieces keep coming out of it. This weekend we got the now infamous spot of Star-Lord, played by Chris Pratt, cranking his middle finger up as Rhomann Dey played by John C. Reilly is going through his rap sheet. Its a bit blurry but it gets the point across.

UPDATE: We’ve been given permission to add an image from the scene. Check out the details on Star-Lord’s rap sheet, especially his known associate, Yondu Udonta, played by Michael Rooker. We covered that back at the start of our site, so go read up on it.

To Marvel’s Infinity and Beyond

1

In this piece, I try to give background and help answer the question “What is Marvel’s Infinity?” Please be warned, SPOILERS for Age of Ultron and other properties may be included despite my attempts to keep them minimal. You have been warned.

Each year, sometimes multiple times, comic book readers get treated to Events in the universe that tend to setup a new status quo for the coming year. These are generally 6-12 issues (depending on the story) and have results that feed out into other, more focused series (Civil War and Civil War: Frontline, as examples). The concept of Event Series runs back as far as the first Galactus arrival on Earth so many years ago in Fantastic Four and really picked up around the time Secret Wars was published. Bringing all of the Marvel heroes together in one series is something we all love to see and Events are the easiest way to make that happen.

In all fairness, Event comics are the first comics I ever read. Since I was handed a full copy of Marvel’s Civil War, I only read each year’s events and followed up accordingly. It wasn’t until my exposure to the Ultimate Universe did I find character based issues enthralling. In order of release (but not limited to these), I’ve read Civil War, World War Hulk, Secret Invasion, Siege, Fear Itself, Avengers vs. X-men, Age of Ultron and now we’re up to Infinity. Infinity is the culmination of Marvel NOW’s launch of Avengers and New Avengers, two of my favorite titles, with sprinklings of stories from Guardians of the Galaxy and Iron Man throughout. We’re getting a cosmic level event and a threat against Earth all at the same time, which will see a war fought on two fronts.

Infinity takes its name from the prior events, Infinity Gauntlet, Infinity War, and Infinity Crusade, all which focus on Thanos’ (that purple guy at the end of Avengers) main goal of collecting the Infinity Gems (6 items that control space, time, power, reality, mind, and soul) and socketing them into a single glove so he can essentially rule the entire universe by killing everything. This would make his love, the embodiment of Death, truly love him in return. It’s a tragic love story that turns Thanos into the cunning brute he is today. If you would notice the number of times Infinity is mentioned in there, you might understand where the event gets its title from.

The last time we saw the Infinity Gems in the Marvel Universe, the Illuminati (a secret group of Marvel’s biggest badasses, current roster includes: Iron Man, Mr. Fantastic, Black Bolt, Namor, Dr. Strange, Black Panther, and Beast) were using them to fight off the collapsing reality, which stems from the White Event in Age of Ultron. When used to destroy another merging reality, the gems (all but time, it disappeared) disintegrated leaving that universe’s set destroyed. Thus, these New Avengers (the illuminati) have to create other means of destroying the merging realities in secret, especially from each other.

Black Bolt, king of the Inhumans and Attilan (which floats above Manhattan now), has enlisted the help of his brother, Maximus the Mad, to create weapons that can be used to save their earth by, ya know, blowing up the other ones. This doesn’t sit well with his Black Bolt’s wife, Medusa, and thus a dispute in house Boltagon is almost palpable and brings the Inhumans into one of the main aspects of this grandiose tale.

The Avengers, which I recommend you read from issue 1 to 17, introduces the Builders and their children, the Ex Nihili and Abysses, to Earth. From the introduction of Ex Nihilo (just one), a creator of life, and his sister Abyss, the opposite of course, we get formidable foes for the Avengers. Thus, Stark and Captain America determine to face these bigger problems, they must get bigger. No, this is not a case of going to the gym and buffing up, but in fact growing the core team. Going from the team we saw in the Avengers film, they recruit a specific set of people with skill sets that can complement each other over time. Such staples as Wolverine and Spider-man are included, but also more obscure characters as Hyperion and Manifold. Some of the newer additions to the Marvel Universe also get their introduction issues in the Avengers series. The earth is being plagued by Ex Nihilo’s tampering (making it sentient) and we see those results/conflicts over the issues, leading up to the point where the Avengers have teo recruit more and take off to space.

What is refreshing about Infinity is that Jonathan Hickman has been writing Avengers and New Avengers the entire time. This event was crafted by him from the first issues and is, by no accounts, an accident or forced event. I’m treating his works as I would a filmmaker’s (more specifically Stanley Kubrick) in that nothing is an accident. Everything happens for a reason and we will see the pay off or results of that later.

With the ability to build on these stories and lead to Infinity, Hickman was able to create a cast of brand new characters. We’re not relying on age old friendships or rivalries here (other than Thanos’ attempts at taking Earth), but rather getting introduced to new breeds of species (builders), villains (Corvus Glaive), and heroes (Ex Nihilo). By being able to craft the necessary ingredients for a compelling story from the ground up, he is given a chance to surprise the reader and give them something that hasn’t been done or is expected.

Infinity #1 has just hit shelves this week, but it already brings in all the points from the Avengers and New Avengers books that have been released to date. With it comes a new form of comic book storytelling, chapters within the single book, which show where every player is at the beginning of the story. We know the start; now we have to wait for the end. If story quality and innovation from Hickman continues to follow the mind blowing streak it’s been on, then my friends, I can tell you we will be in for the event of a lifetime this year.

Thor: The Dark World Going IMAX 3D a Week Early

1

IMAX Corporation and Marvel Entertainment today announced that Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World will be digitally re-mastered into the immersive IMAX 3D format and released into IMAX 3D theatres internationally beginning October 30 (Over a week early!).

Chris Hemsworth has played Thor, the god of Thunder in two highly successful Marvel films, 2011’s Thor and 2012’s Marvel’s The Avengers, which collectively grossed nearly $2 billion at the global box office. In this latest adventure, Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins will also reprise their roles, as will Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård, Idris Elba, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Tadanobu Asano, Jaimie Alexander and Rene Russo. Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones) is directing from a story by Don Payne and Robert Rodat, and a screenplay by Christopher L. Yost and Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely.

“Like all the dynamic Marvel characters, Thor has developed a massive global following, and we look forward to moviegoers experiencing this highly anticipated next chapter in IMAX 3D,” said Greg Foster, CEO of IMAX Entertainment and Senior Executive Vice President, IMAX Corp. “We’re excited to continue to build on our flourishing partnership with Marvel and Disney with this iconic property.”

“All the nine realms will be stunningly displayed when ‘Thor: The Dark World’ arrives in IMAX 3D,” said Dave Hollis, Executive Vice President, Theatrical Exhibition Sales and Distribution, The Walt Disney Studios. “We continue to have great success with IMAX and are thrilled to once again work with them to bring the Marvel Universe to life in this premium format.”

The IMAX release of Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX 3D Experience with proprietary IMAX DMR (Digital Re-mastering) technology. (This is pretty sweet tech, it removes a lot of grain that would normally appear with the enlargement.) The crystal-clear images, coupled with IMAX’s customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio, create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.

Thor: The Dark World will hit standard theaters November 8.

What we have here, ladies and gentlemen, is a photo taken from the teaser footage of Guardians of the Galaxy shown at SDCC and presumably D23 the past few weeks. That is correct, this low res picture is Chris Pratt in his regulation Star-Lord attire for the upcoming movie. Notice the glowing red eyes, the metal face, and presumably some large weapon in his hand, we get our first look at the character. Since set photos are beginning to trickle online, please stay tuned as we bring up to date previews for all the upcoming comic book films. Especially this one.
