UPDATE: JUSTICE LEAGUE Movie Confirmed

We’re still 2 years away from DC and WB’s SUPERMAN VS. BATMAN film, but that doesn’t mean they’re not looking beyond that. Today, Greg Silverman, the president of WB Production confirmed that the JUSTICE LEAGUE movie is in the pipeline for release. No details on that release date is given, but we’re estimating 2018, two years after SvB. Along with this news, is that Zack Snyder will be back to direct the movie, which will (of course) be an expansion of the DC Cinematic Universe.

Out of the information from Wall Street Journal’s Speakeasy, Silverman did call the movie “Superman Vs. Batman,” as well as confirming the casting Ray Fisher as Cyborg in the film. With the next movie now starring Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and now Cyborg, we feel it may suffer from Spider-Man 3 syndrome, meaning too much studio input and extra characters at the expense of development.

Are you excited for DC to grow their Cinematic Universe akin to Marvel’s massive success or do you think it will end tragically?

UPDATE 1: According to Latino Review (who had the info on the Justice League/Snyder film before the official news), the new JUSTICE LEAGUE movie is looking to release May 5, 2017. This makes sense as well, since the Superman Vs. Batman film and Justice League are set to film back to back, much like other large film series (The Hobbit, etc).  This release date will also prevent DC’s first team outing with conflicting with the tentative AVENGERS 3 release in 2018. Again, this is speculation, but we expect to find out around Sand Diego ComicCon this summer.

HBO Collections Coming to Amazon Prime

If you know ComicUI, you know we often indulge in Marvel information, especially when it comes to their recent Cinematic Universe. We’ve even provided the complete History of their Marvel Studios recently. However, we’ve come across a bit of information that is pretty awesome to our interests and hope it means good news for you as well.

As of May 21, 2014, several complete HBO specific series and some current ones, will be headed to Amazon Prime. The first HBO content will include every episode of several completed HBO series, including The Sopranos, The Wire, Deadwood, Rome, Six Feet Under, Eastbound & Down, Enlightened, and Flight of the Conchords. Several HBO miniseries like Angels in America, Band of Brothers, John Adams, The Pacific and Parade’s End will be appearing on the service as well.

Not to fret, HBO’s press release notes that seasons of shows like Girls, The Newsroom and Veep will become available approximately three years after airing on HBO. True Blood, Treme, and Boardwalk Empire, having been on the air for several years, are among shows that will have their earliest seasons available beginning May 21st.

We’re sad to report that several fan favorites will not make the cut, including the ever popular Game of Thrones, Sex and the City,  Curb Your Enthusiasm, Entourage, True Detective, plusLuck, Carnivàle, Bored to Death, Hung, John from Cincinnati and How to Make it in America.

To lessen the blow, HBO will be releasing original movies (Game Change, Too Big To Fail, You Don’t Know Jack) and some documentaries including the Autopsy and Iceman series, Ghosts of Abu Ghraib and When the Levees Broke.

My favorite part are the HBO comedy specials will now be available on the service, from comedians Lewis Black, Ellen DeGeneres, Louis CK and Bill Maher.

If you’re not an Amazon Prime member, is this enough to sway you to the service or are you holding out for Netflix to bring the original content from Disney/Marvel and the new season of Orange is the New Black? As a subscriber of both services, I feel this may satisfy my binge watching pleasures for the time being.

First Images from JURASSIC WORLD

No one thought JURASSIC WORLD would happen, but here we are. The first images from the production of the 4th movie in the amazing Jurassic Park franchise have landed and even show off (the ever wonderful) Bryce Dallas Howard. I don’t think her white outfit will be staying pristine for much longer, but its a start. Clever girl.

The film also stars Chris Pratt (Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy), so when those images release, you can find them right here. Jurassic World releases June 12, 2015, so don’t forget to come back to ComicUI, where we’re huge fans of the series as we update you with the newest, best information from the movie! Enjoy.

Jurassic World is being directed by Colin Trevorrow, from a screenplay written by Trevorrow and Derek Connolly. The story is set 22 years after the events of the first film. New Intense AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 Images

ComicUI is Crashing C2E2 2014!

C2E2-Logo-SquareIt is that time of year again! C2E2 is in 8 days and we’re going full force for 2014. C2E2 stands for Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo and was my very first convention back in the early days (2011). During that time, the seeds of ComicUI were being sown on I Can Haz Radio show, which I ran live out of my dorm, which then turned into I Can Haz Podcast for the next year. I talked about movies, comics, books, and pop culture in general for 30 minutes or so a week. It was recorded on my iPhone, edited in Audacity at work, then uploaded to an FTP server (which Brian so graciously hosted). It wasn’t ideal but it was news and our soapbox.

Using that as a launching platform, I dared to dream bigger and applied for press credentials for C2E2 that year, who happened to be hosting little known Chris Hemsworth, who would go on to play Thor. It was a great 3 days of soaking in the culture, spending money, and really making great connections. We always look forward to seeing Victor Dandridge of Vantage: Inhouse Productions. He writes his own comics The Samaritan and The Trouble With Love, but also does some fantastic 8 bit art, which you know we always come back with a ton of. Also, we always meet up with other friends from college as well, rounding out the activities we take part in.

The next 3 years, I’ve attended in one shape or another and it marks the true season of conventions for us here at ComicUI. In 2012 I attended a special premier of The Avengers 3 weeks early at C2E2, and finally in 2013, we were able to take the newly created ComicUI there and really spread our wings. Despite some unforeseen illness, some of us didn’t get to see the floor both days, but this year we’re going strong again! Between Brian and myself, we’ll be introducing new people to C2E2 and covering all the panels we can get our hands on.

Stan Lee c2e2 2014This year, notable comic guests at C2E2 include Adi Granov (Iron Man: Extremis), Gail Simone (Batgirl), Mark Bagley (Ultimate Spider-Man), Scott Snyder (Batman), Tony Moore (The Walking Dead), and of course, Stan Lee (all things awesome). The beauty of C2E2 is that its entertainment guests often provide more excitement than the comic ones, this year we can probably spot these guys: Ashley Eckstein (The Clone Wars), Brian Posehn (Comedian), Chandler Riggs (The Walking Dead), Hulk Hogan (Wrestling), Kristian Nairn (Hodor in Game of Thrones), RJ Mitte (Breaking Bad), Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters), Veronica Taylor (Ash from Pokemon), and several original Power Rangers cast members. As you can tell, its quite the event.

Final Trailer for X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

The last trailer has arrived for X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST and it signifies that the summer movie season is arriving. It feels like not so long ago we were reviewing The Wolverine but First Class seems like a distant memory. I feel more excited for X-Men this summer than Spider-Man, due to the lack of exposure mostly. With Peter Parker and his web slinging alter ego in our face constantly, the X-Men have taken a back seat and only teased bits of the full story.

Watch the trailer below and let us know if they’ve spilled too much or not enough to get you excited for the film! Don’t forget to mark your calendars for May 23!

Opening Scene from X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

Tonight was the MTV Movie Awards, and in accordance to such an event, 20th Century Fox decided to let us see 60 seconds of the opening battle for DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. Set in the future, this gives us a quick look at the abilities of mutants, new and old. We see Blink’s portals, Sunspots solar abilities, Bishop’s energy absorption and manipulation, and tons more. 13 Secrets of Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Now that Captain America: The Winter Soldier has hit theaters, it is time to uncover the secrets Marvel has unleashed on the world. We’ve gone through the film and picked the 13 juiciest bits from the film (and one bonus fun fact) to give you the heads up when the next know-it-all tries to school you. It should go without warning that if you have not seen the film, there are *SPOILERS* below. If you’re not ready for these secrets, then I suggest you back out now.

13 Secrets of The Winter Soldier

1. Batroc is also known as The Leaper, often humiliated in the Ultimate Spider-Man TV series, was given 15 minutes of screen time. This shows smaller characters can be portrayed on films, without taking away from the movie.

2. The Lemurian Star (held hostage by Batroc) is referenced in Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD episode 16. Agent Sitwell is sent there on assignment. Lemurians are also a race of aquatic humans (Mer-people) in the Marvel comics as well.

 

3. Brock Rumlow, the strike team leader, will become Crossbones, a mercenary who attempts to kill Captain America in the Marvel Comics.

4. Agent 13, as we find out, is Sharon Carter who has an insomniatic Aunt. That aunt happens to be Peggy Carter, former love interest of Steve Rogers. I smell romance in the future for Steve.

5. Many faces from The First Avenger return on screen in this film, sadly excluding Stanley Tucci as Professor Irskine. The Howling Commandos are seen in pictures, as well as Howard Stark, Peggy Carter, and Colonel Chester Phillips (Tommy Lee Jones).

6. This includes villains, such as Hydra agents, the Red Skull, and even the best representation of a modern Arnim Zola to date.

 

7. Speaking of returning characters, Senator Stern, known mostly from Iron Man 2 returns in this film and utters the most dubious of lines. Perhaps Hydra was after Stark tech all along.

 

8. Agent Sitwell mentions that something strange is going on in the Marvel Universe. Dr. Stephen Strange, sorcerer supreme, is a supernatural character for Marvel who deals often with demons and other dimensions run afoul. The best representation of him is to watch the Doctor Strange animated film from Marvel. He is heavily rumored to be a film in development at Marvel Studios for Phase 3.

9. In a quick shot of Project Insight targeting everyone, we see a quick glimpse at the newly renovated Avengers Tower in New York. The A remains, but has been revamped for the Avengers.

 

10. “The path of the righteous man…” as seen on Nick Fury’s tombstone is from Ezekiel 25:17. This is the same line Samuel L. Jackson uses in Pulp Fiction before he kills someone, namely Brad.

Fun Fact: Tim Roth from Pulp Fiction also played Emil Blonsky aka The Abomination in Marvel Studios’ The Incredible Hulk (2008).

11. Natasha/Black Widow has a necklace in the film with just an arrow on it. This could be a representation of Hawkeye without him appearing in the film. We know they have a history, but could it be romantic? This is speculation until further evidence says otherwise.

12. We FINALLY see where Loki’s sceptre has been and apparently that it has much more power than controlling the minds of men. Hydra has their hands on it and is doing something pretty devious with it as we can tell. Those twins weren’t exactly born with powers…

 

13. …but they are The Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. The two new members of the Avengers in Age of Ultron never started off as heroes, but seem to be handled by Hydra and a Baron Von Strucker himself. Their inevitable turn to good will be awesome to see on screen.

Sidenote: Quicksilver has brown hair in this scene, but Age of Ultron sees him with silver/gray hair.

Sidenote 2: You’ll see them in X-Men: Days of Future Past this year, but not the same versions. Originally they are Magneto’s children and Mutants, but Marvel Studios can’t use that history for the characters.

BONUS: Not a fact, but something equally awesome. The very last scene after the credits, is a single take shot, that is by far one of the best shots in the film. Listen to the music as well, picked perfectly.

ComicUI Reviews Captain America: The Winter Soldier

I’d like to apologize for not having this review up sooner, however, I felt I needed a second screening to fully encapsulate my feelings for this film. That in no way insinuates disrespect or dislike from the film, but in fact opposite. Mostly, the first screening had two girls who could not keep their mouths shut for more than 2 minutes at a time, therefore I was distracted by all the vulgarities I wished to use, but didn’t out of respect of children in the theater. However, the second outing was much more pleasant and solidified my thoughts for the film. Enjoy!

 

ComicUI Reviews – Captain America: The Winter Soldier

The Winter Soldier is first and foremost an action film that rivals other movies of the genre, such as Die Hard and James Bond films, but also presses the hot button topics that make the film relevant to the world as a whole. Standing as an individual outing for Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, anyone who has not seen The First Avenger (2010) should not fret, as this film is easily accessible to anyone, not just the Marvel diehards. If you have seen Captain America’s first outing and are more hesitant to partake in The Winter Soldier, you should be relieved to know that this film has taken storytelling, character development, and pacing to new levels that are only matched by Iron Man (2008) and The Avengers (2012).

The film manages to bring a thoughtful approach to modern topics, such as social media, the NSA, and freedom vs security, while at the same time maintaining the Marvel approach to films, much like Iron Man did all those years ago. While not overly saturated with humor, the pacing of this film starts off very solid and doesn’t slow down throughout. From the Lemurian Star and Batroc (the leaper), downtown Washington DC car chases and shootouts, to finally, Helicarrier size action sets, it never once lets up or disappoints. Hardly ever does the film refer to the events of New York from The Avengers, which also helps the film stand on its own two feet, rather than rely on that film’s story and success to ensure the seats in the theater are filled.

Following Steve Rogers, the Black Widow, and Nick Fury who have been setup in previous Marvel installments, we’re treated to new characters  in the film, such as Sam Wilson (the Falcon) and Alexander Pierce, portrayed with superb gravitas by Robert Redford, who knows how to make the role come to life. It never once seems crowded when all the pieces fall into place, even as Steve Roger’s ghosts from his past life are brought up to haunt him.

I only regret the film for not including the titular Winter Soldier as much as promised, but also applaud the restrained use of the character. With this double edged sword and quite possibly my own inherent knowledge of the character, I can say that when he does make his first screen appearance, there I felt absolute fear. From the frightening mystery to the haunting soundtrack accompanying the character, the only thing I crave from the film is more Winter Soldier.

At the end of the day, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, is one of the best action films to be released recently, as well as one of the better modern political thrillers of our day. By taking these genres first and inserting the established Marvel characters, it elevates this film to new levels, rather than resting on its laurels from The Avengers. After seeing the film twice now, I can say without question that The Winter Soldier now takes its place in my mind as the second greatest Marvel Studios production to date, only behind the impossibly amazing Avengers.

 Review 4.5/5 Stars – Marvel Movie Magic!
