ComicUI – AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Review

0

Marvel’s THE AVENGERS did something in 2012 that no one thought possible. It took some of the biggest films in the previous four years and combined the characters into a cohesive, fun, action filled adventure without violating the rules the universe had set forth. In 2015, AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON not only had to follow that film, but also exist in that universe that now contains 10 total films, two television series, multiple tie-in comics, and expectations that definitely went through the roof. Does AGE OF ULTRON succeed? Entirely yes, but not without some missteps along the way.

From the improved cinematography, a better perspective of each character’s unique flaws, and high octane action, AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON succeeds to surpass the original film in those aspects. The sequel, however, contains a few issues with pacing and asking the audience to suspend their disbelief like a portal to another part of the galaxy over New York city. To compare Avengers films would be a disservice to all audience members, although we wish it were so simple. As the movie states, we like to think in terms of black and white; absolutes, when in reality, AGE OF ULTRON is truly a great comic book film and could never pass our unrealistically high expectations.

Avengers: Age of Ultron – 4/5 Stars

ultron-ratings-stars-4of5

First and foremost, there will be some SPOILERS in this review. You can also listen to the spoiler filled Superhero Slate podcast on Monday dedicated purely to Age of Ultron’s release. Otherwise, if you would like to go in blind, refer to the opening paragraph. Anything more and I would hate to ruin the ride!

The fanfare for the film that arrived with THOR: THE DARK WORLD has been changed to match Alan Silvestri’s Avenger’s Theme from the first film. This is a bit jarring to not hear the page flips, but its soon quelled by the actual film’s opening. AGE OF ULTRON opens up with the team together and that is one hell of an experience seeing them take on HYDRA. Theres a scene that rivals the one-take shot from the first film and you’ll want to rewatch that for days. This is also a direct tie-in to the current AGENTS OF SHIELD TV show and thats pretty cool, as well as some blunt nods to the first Avenger’s outing.

From here, the first third of the movie is probably the messiest. A lot has obviously been cut due to time restraints, so hopefully we’ll get an extended director’s cut later on. It makes some of the transitions quicker than expected and we’re sort of just supposed to know what happens. The jumps assume you’re a smart audience, but still leave questions open that linger in the back of your mind. Exactly how did Ultron get his newer body? The world may  never know. This is just a single instance of several scenes that feel disjointed and lacking proper plotlines that make them feel more relevant to the overall flow of the story. Regardless, this doesn’t hurt the film in the long run, they just may confuse people who aren’t paying attention.

There are tons of surprises in this film! Its not full of easter eggs (although some strong ties to the larger Marvel cinematic universe are laid out), but there are some strong reveals that even blew me away. I went in as cold as possible, only seeing the trailers and one TV spot on accident (damn you Agents of SHIELD!), which helped me feel like an infant viewing the world for the first time in a lot of scenes. At this point in time, now we know the identity of at least 4 infinity stones, and with the cinematic slate nailed out through 2019, we all know who’s coming for dinner.

In the end, AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON is a prettier film with a better cinematic approach to the story. There are a variety of locales, though not as many as we’ve been told to believe, which adds flavor to the film. Even the extensive, fast paced, action packed scenes are easy to follow and outdo the Battle of New York by a long shot. The writing is wittier and fun, but still maintains heart, giving these superhumans an actual human feel. Their flaws are exposed and taken advantage of, which in turn makes them more compelling than their first team-up film.

Before continuing, there are SUPER SPOILERS in the next section. Don’t read this if you want to be TRULY surprised. Feel free to continue if you’ve seen the movie and enjoy (bad) puns.

There was no doubt in my mind that not everyone was going to survive this film, however, it was the waste of Baron Von Strucker that really chaps my ass. A great villain in the comics and potentially in the cinematic universe, was laid to waste without having more than 5 total minutes of screen time. Even Ulysses Klaw made it out alive, so lets give him a hand for that….wait. A final death could have been handled differently as well, but its happened, lets get over it and move on quickly.

Now lets think about the future since we’ve mentioned Klaw. He and his vibranium stash are definitely strongly tied to Wakanda, meaning the Black Panther movie is being setup, much like Stephen Strange was mentioned in THE WINTER SOLDIER. The New Avengers training facility leaves Captain America in charge of his new team, including the Black Widow, War Machine (better than Iron Patriot), the Vision (such a mother fucking badass, seriously), Scarlet Witch (her final outfit is spot on), and the Falcon. These ‘New Avengers’ can and probably will be seen in CIVIL WAR next year and more than likely in INFINITY WAR the years after. We finally also got confirmation that Loki’s sceptre was the Mind stone and is in fact, yellow. Totally called this years ago, so…BOOM!

And yes, we’re SUPER disappointed there were no post-scene credits and how did Thanos get the gauntlet back form Odin’s armory? That, is a review for another day.

Games with Gold: May Freebies

0

Well, after having a double dose of April’s Games with Gold, May is looking weak. Theres not a lot to say, but we’ve been spoiled on Gears of War, Assassin’s Creed, and Child of Light was even fun! But man, May is just…the worst.

If you’re into free games, head onto the Xbox store this May with your Gold Subscription to download the Games with Gold. You can do this from your Xbox One, Xbox 360, or through the browser to get both, even if you have only one of the consoles.

On Xbox One, Xbox Live Gold members can download CastleStorm: Definitive Edition ($14.99 ERP) for free during the month of May. Pool Nation FX ($13.99 ERP) is also being offered for an additional month. But this game is the absolute worst.

On Xbox 360, starting Friday, May 1st, Mafia II ($19.99 ERP) will be free for Xbox Live Gold members through May 15th. Then on May 16th, Xbox Live Gold Members can download F1 2013 ($39.99 ERP) for free through May 31st.

SEINFELD to stream all episodes on Hulu

0

Seinfeld isn’t just a TV show, its a way of life. Ask anyone who knows me, I’ve seen every episode, in order, more than 10 times each. Its a bi-yearly thing where I start at the beginning and get through them all. My girlfriend doesn’t quite get it yet, but she was absolutely awesome and helped me get tickets to see Jerry Seinfeld live last month. It was fantastic and wonderful and he still holds up after all this time.

As for the show, I will one day hopefully own them on blu-ray, if they’re ever remastered and released on the format. Either way, as of June this year, every episode of Seinfeld will be available to stream via Hulu Plus. The digital content service supposedly paid a little under $1 million for each episode, and that includes all 180 episodes. This is NOT ideal for me, as I despise Hulu with every fiber of my being, you have to pay for the service THEN watch commercials, but yada yada yada I don’t want to be a pirate and download all the episodes when I’d gladly pay for them.

Confirmed by Jerry Seinfeld and Hulu this morning, its quite the big deal. “There’s no question that Seinfeld has played a major role in TV history, which is why we cannot wait to make all episodes of the series available to stream for the first time ever on Hulu. Whether you are an existing fan who just wants to relive your favorite moments over and over again, or are a new viewer who wants experience Seinfeld from the very beginning, Hulu will now be your destination to stream what has been dubbed as one of the greatest shows of all time,” said Craig Erwich, SVP, Head of Content, Hulu.

Will you be getting Hulu Plus to watch all of Seinfeld or find another means?

First Look at NIGHTCRAWLER from X-MEN: APOCALYPSE

0

Since we’ve learned that Kodi Smit-McPhee was cast as Nightcrawler in the upcoming X-MEN: APOCALYPSE film, we’ve been curious as to how they’ll do the character. Can they do justice to the amazing look and performance from X2 or will it be something more CG Rest assured, worried fans, the first official look at Nightcrawler definitely shows some diligence on the character, who I assume we’ll see for several X-Men movies to come.

Released on Twitter, the video below shows a static image of Smit-McPhee in his Nightcrawler makeup and garb appear through the iconic “BAMF!” smoke and then disappear the same way. Its a tease, but definitely gives us an idea of what to see in the film.

Based on experience int he X-Men movies, do you think Nightcrawler will get the time and energy he deserves? Nothing will ever top the opening scene to X2 with him and they have a lot to live up to. Either way, here’s Nightcrawler!

First Look at Jared Leto’s JOKER

0

Now we’re a few days late on this, but mostly because we’ve been in Chicago at C2E2 all weekend. Stay tuned for those exclusive interviews and coverage, but now let’s focus on the Joker.

This image is the first official release of the Joker from the upcoming Suicide Squad film. This is a drastically different look than we’ve seen, especially over the years. Based on the Smiling Man image, the Joker has become the ying to Batman’s yang. We’ve seen iterations in Batman ’66 TV series, Jack Nicholson in the 80’s, Heath Ledger more recently, and finally we get to a Jared Leto version for the 2016 film.

First thing to notice is all the tattoos. Do they have meaning? They’re very iconic of the Joker’s messages he normally leaves. A huge cartoonish grin, tons of haha’s on his arm, and do we spy a Robin on his right bicep? Potential foreshadowing there. Also, he’s apparently damaged with a capital d.

Secondly, the coloring appears to be spot on. Green hair? Check. White skin? Check. Purple glove? Ummm…sure!

Lastly, the teeth. Those are metal teeth. To me, this is post Batman and he was pulverized by him, losing all his teeth. If he’s in prison, the tattoos and teeth then make sense to keep that signature smile. Or they’re just being weird. We’ll see.

Tell us your thoughts and opinions on the Joker and we’ll be sure to make a list, check it twice, then probably do something with it. SUICIDE SQUAD is due for release August 5, 2016 from DC and Warner Bros.

BREAKING: Marvel’s DAREDEVIL Season 2 in 2016

0

Out of left field, Marvel has announced their Netflix Original series DAREDEVIL will receive a second season coming in 2016. Currently, some major changes to note is Steven DeKnight and Drew Goddard will not be returning as show runners but rather Doug Petrie (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “American Horror Story”) and Marco Ramirez (“Sons of Anarchy”), who worked closely with Executive Producers on the first season.

Also, what this means for IRON FIST and the DEFENDERS mini-series is currently up in the air. The press release below goes on to mention AKA JESSICA JONES and LUKE CAGE’s release dates but not the ones for the former. We were not expecting a second season of DAREDEVIL before the Defenders arrive, but the critical acclaim of the recently released series (even we loved it, read our review) has pushed Marvel into giving us what we crave, more of the blind lawyer’s street justice.

Do you think Marvel will make a mistake with running blind into a second season of DAREDEVIL on Netflix or will it be exactly what we need before the Defenders make an appearance? Read on for more information!

[alert]

Marvel and Netflix are proud to announce that “Marvel’s Daredevil” will receive a second season, available only on the streaming service in 2016!

With the first season of “Marvel’s Daredevil” proving a smash success with both audiences and critics, Netflix and Marvel will continue to create further adventures of the Man Without Fear! Doug Petrie (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “American Horror Story”) and Marco Ramirez (“Sons of Anarchy”), who worked closely with Executive Producers Steven S. DeKnight and Drew Goddard during the first season, will serve as showrunners for Season 2. Petrie, Ramirez, Goddard (“Cabin in the Woods”), and Jeph Loeb (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”) will serve as Executive Producers of Season 2.

“While previous commitments unfortunately prevent me from continuing on with Daredevil into its second season,” DeKnight explains, “I could not be happier that Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez are carrying the torch. They were invaluable collaborators during our first season, and I for one can’t wait to see what they do with the show moving forward.”
“Marvel’s Daredevil” is produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Studios for Netflix.

“Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones” comes only to Netflix later this year and “Marvel’s Luke Cage” premieres on the streaming service in 2016. Future series exclusively debuting on Netflix include “Marvel’s Iron Fist” and “Marvel’s Defenders,” a mini-series event that reimagines a team of self-sacrificing, heroic characters.

Blinded as a young boy but imbued with extraordinary senses, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) fights against injustice by day as a lawyer, and by night as the Super Hero “Daredevil” in modern day Hell’s Kitchen, New York City. “Marvel’s Daredevil” stars Charlie Cox, Rosario Dawson, Vincent D’Onofrio, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Scott Glenn, Bob Gunton, Toby Leonard Moore, Vondie Curtis Hall, Ayelet Zurer.

ComicUI at C2E2 2015!

0

ComicUI is going back to the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo! This marks 5 years that at least one of us has visited the comic-con and every year, we’re only more excited to visit. In 2011, Chris Hemsworth was the big attraction before Thor was released and some of the industry’s then heavy hitting writers were on panel to discuss comics, stories, and just have a good time. Prized collections from that trip include a SHIELD ID card and signatures from Joe Quesada (Marvel’s CCO), Jeph Loeb (not that exciting actually), and Brian Michael Bendis (Ultimate Spider-Man). The following year I was lucky enough to see Marvel’s THE AVENGERS 3 weeks early! It was something unforgettable and spoiled us in hopes of seeing more early releases. In 2013 we stayed at the Red Roof Inn with lots of space and superior wiring for the electronics (sarcasm). It was so much fun, Brian stayed in and got real up close and personal with the bathroom tile, aka he got sick. That leads us into last year where both of us got to meet Stan ‘the man’ Lee with photographs to prove it. He was missing the classic ‘stache, but thats ok. He called me a good man.

As 2015’s C2E2 approaches, ComicUI is upping the ante in all sorts of ways. For the first time ever, we’ll be sharing a booth in Artist Alley with Brian Lau, the mastermind behind Staunch Ambition, a graphic novel we’re helping sponsor through its release. If you’re lucky enough to be in attendance, come by table R12, buy yourself a special convention version of Staunch Ambition and you can get it signed by us! No charge! Brian will be selling some of his Hippo prints as well, so make sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook this weekend to see what we’re up to exactly.

Beyond ourselves, we’re planning on interviewing all sorts of people! We have scheduled time with Adult Swim, including Dave Willis (Aqua Teen Hunger Force) and Brad Neely (China, IL), touring Insidious (the movie) in 4D with Oculus Rift technology, chatting up Magnetic Press about their offerings (including one by Tom DeLonge of Blink-182), and hopefully sitting down with Jonathan Hickman of Avengers comic book fame. We’re hoping to offer these up in video format, as we have a ComicUI posse this year, including our favorites: Adam and Greg, joining us again from last year’s C2E2.

Other famous faces at the show include Chad Coleman (The Walking Dead), CM Punk (Thor comics), David Ramsey (Arrow), Hayley Attwell (Agent Carter), Jason Mewes (Jay and Silent Bob), Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones; Aquaman), Jewel Staite (Firefly), Kevin Smith (like…everything), Ming-Na Wen (Agents of SHIELD), M. Night Shyamalnanadnadnx (6th Sense), and Sylvester McCoy (Doctor Who; The Hobbit) from media.

Comics industry guests include Bill Willingham, Dan Slott, Gail Simone, Humberto Ramos, Jerome Opena, Jonathan Hickman, Max Brooks, Rick Remender, Ryan Stegman, Scott Snyder, and of course, the venerable Stan Lee yet again! Other names you may know from comics are: Al Ewing, Art Baltazar, Charles Soule, Chip Zdarsky, Christy Blanch, Dirk Manning, Jason Latour, Mark Waid, Mike Norton, Skottie Young and Terry Moore. For a full list of guests, check out C2E2’s website.

Although this may be a lot to take in before the floor officially opens up, we again want people who can’t make it to feel like they’re with us. Follow us on Twitter @ComicUI, @Valdan for Chris and @picketfence14 if you want the musings of Brian. For most of our pictures, albums, and fun stuff, you should totally like our Facebook page too! We’ll be covering everything possible over all 3 days. If we’re lucky, we’ll also be watching Guardians of the Galaxy as part of our Countdown to Ultron with more live tweets than ever! Be sure to check back periodically as C2E2 goes on and we hope to see you there!

New JURASSIC WORLD Trailer

0

We’ve not seen so many teasers and trailers in a long time. Universal Pictures has released a new trailer for the upcoming JURASSIC WORLD movie set to release this June. Starring Chris Pratt (so hot right now) and Bryce Dallas Howard, it takes place on Jurassic Park’s island 20 years after the first incident. Now with the park open, they’re genetically modifying dinosaurs and inevitably, one breaks out.

This trailer definitely is delivering on the fear, terror, and mysticism that Jurassic Park offered us int he 90’s. Its hard to not be excited for this film, as the original movies have a special place to me and hold up well after all this time. With JURASSIC WORLD in 2 months, I can’t wait to revisit Isla Nublar and see what mistakes the humans are making.

Directed by Colin Trevorrow, Jurassic World hits theaters on June 12.

New FANTASTIC FOUR Trailer and Screenshots

0

The newest FANTASTIC FOUR trailer landed on Sunday, an odd time for trailers to release, and it ups the hype level for Fox’s reboot of the franchise. In this new look at the film, we see everyone’s powers in action, get loads more of the story, and finally meet our Doom! Well, not OUR Doom per se, but their version of the villain.

With all this new information and action thrown at us, it seems that FANTASTIC FOUR isn’t as timid and shy as we had expected. Sure, we said the last trailer was good and set a nice level of expectation, but this surpassed that. I’ve officially moved it from “Cautiously Optimistic” to “Extreme Hype” without any hesitation.

Now watch the trailer below and enjoy 95 high quality screenshots from it below as well to really dig into this fantastic film.

Fantastic Four Screenshots

FANTASTIC FOUR, a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.

Fantastic Four stars Miles Teller as Mr. Fantastic, Kate Mara as The Invisible Woman, Michael B. Jordan as The Human Torch, Jamie Bell as The Thing, and Toby Kebbell as Victor Domashev/Doctor Doom. Directed by Josh Trank and written by Simon Kinberg, Fantastic Four is set to be released on August 7th, 2015!
