Super Bowl XLVIII Commercial Roundup

Let me start off by being blunt, 2014 was the worst commercial year ever. EVER. From lack of creativity, humor, and ultimately super hero movies, I can’t believe they let this opportunity go to waste. However, on the plus side, we got some good trailers and teasers and first looks at some movies coming out this year, and trust me those films will benefit from it. Lets recap!

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

This is my favorite choice of trailers for the Super Bowl this year, simply because Marvel delivers on the action, drama, suspense, and clarity amongst trailers. This is a must see film with a release 2 months from today, you can’t afford to miss this trailer.

Amazing Spider-Man 2

Sony brought its A-game to the movie trailer reveal this year as well, with my very close second place trailer, Amazing Spider-Man 2: Enemies Unite. While most films focus on tropes of heroes coming together to save the day, we don’t have many films focusing on the villains joining forces. The reason this doesn’t take first place is due to the quick cuts, blurry action, and lack of full views on the Rhino or Goblin characters. Its also worth noting this film has the OLD Marvel logo on it, instead of the new fancy one. You can see the differences from our post last week.

Transformers: Age of Extinction

Transformers brought some serious firepower this year, with a teaser worth of the Super Bowl. While not much is known about the plot or characters in the film, we do get to see Optimus Prime on a T-Rex robot, Grimlock, confirming our first look at the Dinobots. Plus that one dude’s face became a gun. WOW.

Need for Speed

I’m only adding this in because video game movies are hard to do, but this already has a great model in the Fast franchise. With the recent passing of Paul Walker, perhaps Need for Speed could pick up the pieces and create a new series with new characters and faster cars. Or it could tank completely. Either way, they had a trailer!


Muppets Most Wanted

Muppets are one of my favorite things ever. I’m happy they’re creating more films and this one looks to only take what the recent film did and run with it. Without the same main characters returning, I feel confident this will be worth the changes and benefit from it. Lets just hope this doesn’t take too many cues from the Great Muppet Caper, I’d prefer an original film.

 

Missing Trailers

X-Men: Days of Future Past – Fox should have taken some time and money to push this film, especially since we’ve hardly seen any footage. With the film coming up in a few months, it’ll definitely make money but I’m least excited about this when compared to Marvel and Sony’s films. The film recently got a lot of mixed feedback from the Empire Magazine covers it released.

Guardians of the Galaxy – James Gunn confirmed this movie wouldn’t make an appearance, but its quite the same it didn’t. A teaser for the relatively unknown property would have been fantastic, and every one would have fallen in love instantly. However, I don’t expect advertising for this to begin until after Captain America has its heyday.

300: Rise of an Empire – A sequel to 300 isn’t necessary, and this prequel seems even more like a rehash of the first film. Its not high on my list or anyone’s I know. Glad it wasn’t shown today.

Ninja Turtles – Toy promotions are starting to showcase this live action/CGI film’s protagonists and I’m curious how it is going to come together in the end. Least excited about Megan Fox as April O’Neil of anything, so I’m not sure how I’ll feel about the whole thing.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For – The sequel to Sin City has been in development hell forever and I’m actually impressed it’ll be released this year, nearly 10 years later. With Josh Brolin taking a lead role, maybe we’ll get another fantastic installment in this series.

Empire’s 25 X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Character Covers Review

Last week, Empire Magazine revealed 25 special edition covers for their magazine in honor of the X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST film that is releasing this May. Out of the 25 covers, 11 are characters from the Past, 13 are from the future, and one of Bryan Singer in the middle. After having a week to look at these character covers, we’re gonna go over the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly from this preview. each cover links to the next one, creating a huge panoramic photo, which we’ve included as well.

The Good

Future Wolverine (13) – This cover gives us our first taste of Wolverine in the future. We see that after The Wolverine, he has gotten his adamantium claws back and his outfit shows a more battle ready Wolverine than we’ve seen before. The subtle yellow and blue shades throw back to his original outfit, without making it seem forced or fake.

Past Magneto (9)  – Michael Fassbender has been the best choice to play a young Magneto and he continues to impress in the upcoming film. Some may ask why the master of magnetism needs armor when he can stop almost any bullet, but the mutant is still young and may not know how to fully control his powers yet. However, we can’t deny the presence of Fassbender in the role, especially with the iconic helmet.

The Bad

Future Sunspot (20) – Seeing as this is the first time we’re meeting Sunspot, I find his overt orange tones a bit much for the mutant and his abilities. On top of that, he’s got a really bad hair design thats reminiscent of some sort of sex offender. That high color on the back of his jacket also doesn’t look right.

Past Toad (3) – Toad has been noticeably absent since his demise in the first X-Men film. The first version was played spectacularly by Ray Park and seemed very 80’s punk look for the amphibious mutant. As the last mutant announced for the film, we see Toad used to be in the military and perhaps has some facial disfiguration. The Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver look is definitely working, but I’m not sure this Toad will be as memorable as Park’s performance.

The Ugly

Past Quicksilver (8) – This has been the worst case scenario of character translation from the books to real life. We haven’t seen him in action just yet in the film, but all pictures provided have not been favorable for the supposed son of Magneto. The Empire cover provided for the character s akin to an Animorph’s book cover, with the motion blur and separate poses. What is with his belt too? I’m not even sure.

Past Havok (2) – Havok is one of the few mutants carrying over from X-Men: First Class and it seems they tried the least on his magazine cover. The apparent photoshop effect to showcase his power set seems half-assed and the character is barely recognizable from his prior appearance. Also, he appears to be in the same mutant military unit with Toad, which could mean less screen time than we’re accustomed to. Either way, poor representation of the character.

 

Overall, we get some good, mediocre, and bad covers from Empire’s special DAYS OF FUTURE PAST issue, but again this has been the first look we’ve seen at some of the characters. I want to mention the Future Sentinel (25) cover gives us the most intrigue, as I would like to see the unit in action rather than still life, so I’ve chosen to leave it out on purpose, despite the burnt to a crisp look it has.

Games with Gold – February 2014

February is kicking it off right, starting off with a fantastic game, Dead Rising free until February 16 and then Toy Soldiers: Cold War picking that up to finish off the month. This continues the tradition of one free Xbox Retail Game and one free Arcade game a month. The games are only getting better as this continues, since everyone with a Gold subscription (Xbox 360 only, the Xbox One will get their GwG games sometime later) gets 2 free games a month, sometimes with all the DLC.

 

 

February 1 – 15 – Dead Islanddead island xbox live 360 games with gold february

A holiday paradise gone mad after a zombie outbreak. The player’s only chance to survive is to escape from the island. Dead Island combines first-person action with a heavy focus on melee combat, character development and customization of a vast array of weapons. All of these features are presented in a dark zombie story with a campaign that can be played with up to 4 players in co-op mode.

Casting Update: Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luther, Irons as Alfred

In a whirlwind of casting announcements, WB has confirmed that Jesse Eisenberg and Jeremy Irons will be playing Lex Luthor and Alfred, the butler, respectively in the upcoming Batman/Superman film. What makes it most surprising is the age of Eisenberg and the lack of rumor around his involvement in the film.

We’ve heard that Bryan Cranston was up for the role and other various actors who can pull off the menacing, evil, bald persona, but that kid from Zombieland? I’m not sure if they’re going for the ‘shock’ casting announcements for this film to build hype or what, but they’re definitely being bold.

Jesse Eisenberg is known for his roles in such films as The Social Network, portraying the founder of Facebook, and Zombieland, with fellow comic book star Emma Stone. Jeremy Irons is best remembered as the voice of Scar in The Lion King and the main villain in Die Hard with a Vengeance. His casting seems less odd given the circumstances.

Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Jesse Eisenberg has been set to star as Lex Luthor and Jeremy Irons will play Alfred in the upcoming Zack Snyder untitled Superman/Batman film. The dual announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, and Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

Snyder stated, “Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman’s rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940. What’s great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He’s a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions.”

The director added, “As everyone knows, Alfred is Bruce Wayne’s most trusted friend, ally and mentor, a noble guardian and father figure. He is an absolutely critical element in the intricate infrastructure that allows Bruce Wayne to transform himself into Batman. It is an honor to have such an amazingly seasoned and gifted actor as Jeremy taking on the important role of the man who mentors and guides the guarded and nearly impervious façade that encapsulates Bruce Wayne.”

Snyder’s film stars Henry Cavill, reprising his role as Superman/Clark Kent, Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne, and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince. The film also reunites “Man of Steel” stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane.

The new film is currently being written by Chris Terrio, from a screenplay by David S. Goyer. Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder are producing, with Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Wesley Coller, David S. Goyer and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers.

The film is set to open worldwide on May 6, 2016, and is based on Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster, Batman characters created by Bob Kane, and Wonder Woman created by William Moulton Marston, appearing in comic books published by DC Entertainment.

Throwback Thursday: Marvel Studios Logo

I know, Marvel Studios is only 6 years old, with proper Marvel films only being around since 2001 or so, but I feel with the recent change in Marvel’s Cinematic introduction video clip, we take a look at the new and the old, forget theres a different, and appreciate we even have a Marvel Studios today.

For those who have seen Thor: The Dark World and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D. after November, you may have noticed that Marvel has removed their typical fanfare that was seen first before the first Spider-Man. After all this time, Marvel decided to put up a new one within a week, and I honestly am not sure how I feel about it.

Take a look at the new Marvel Studios intro clip.

The new design includes the same elements that made the first 2D, simplistic design so memorable and recognizable and literally turned it into a 3D version. This doesn’t really violate anything or make it unrecognizable, but removes that nostalgic feel that we’ve grown accustomed to with any film starring a Marvel character. Now that the company is moving onto more than just cinematic films, perhaps it is a time to stand out more and become individualized in the industry.

Kevin Feige has more of a reason to change it. “You look back at the other films, and they’ve also featured our studio partners’ or distribution partners’ logos. But now that we are our own entity within the Walt Disney Company, it is only the Marvel logo in front of the movies. So that felt like the time to update it and have something that is more substantial as a standalone logo in front of our features,” Feige told Marvel.com. I find this to be more acceptable, seeing as I didn’t notice there weren’t any other logos in front of the film. Also, in the past 20 years, Marvel has gone from bankruptcy to its own film studio is very impressive. I’m not even mad.

Toy Promotion Reveals New Batman Outfit

We haven’t covered any DC films lately, not since the Superman Review and the announcement of Batman/Superman film. That is our fault, but probably more of a choice. We just don’t jive with the DC Cinematic Universe as much and they aren’t pushing out movies and projects and fun pieces of news like Marvel is, but we’re not here to judge.

Today, through a toy promotion, we may get our first look at the brand new Bat-Suit from the upcoming BATMAN/SUPERMAN film that will be hitting theaters in May 2016. We’ve provided the image to see, which shows the Batman toy next to a Superman toy and honestly, we’re believing it.

This suit is more armor based and modular, rather than full body encompassing. With this look and style for an older, weary Batman, it rather suits (pun intended) this new version of the caped crusader. Notice the different arm pads and life-like feel of how it shapes to his body, but still allows for super mobility. Sure its just a toy, but we love to theorize over at ComicUI.

ANT-MAN Moves Release 2 Weeks Forward

Marvel has announced that they are moving up the release of ANT-MAN from July 31, 2015 to July 17, 2015. This is no doubt due to the recent casting of Michael Douglas as Hank Pym and the positive feedback from this choice. As more news and stories emerge about the film, it only makes sense for Marvel to capitalize on this in a constructive manner and give us what we want, Ant-Man sooner.

2 weeks is not a huge margin by any means, since we’re still over a year and a half away from release, but in the July movie season, that could mean life or death for a film. Forward is always better than backwards, ask any DC movie fan (Batman/Superman film was recently pushed back over 6 months to a May 2016 release), so we say bring it on!

The wait for Marvel’s “Ant-Man” just got two weeks shorter!

Marvel’s “mite”-iest hero will now hit theaters July 17, 2015 courtesy of director Edgar Wright, two weeks earlier than the previously announced date of July 31.

Ant-Man fans have had quite a few reasons to rejoice lately, with the casting of Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man and Michael Douglas as Hank Pym as we get ready to start production on the highly-anticipated film later this year!

Throwback Thursday: Adam Warlock in the Marvel Movies

Round 2: Adam Warlock in the Marvel Movies

For those that have seen Thor: The Dark World, you may proceed. For those who have not, well, you probably shouldn’t read on unless you want to know the bigger game plan Marvel has for their cinematic universe, and trust me, their plans are pretty huge.

If you’ve seen the film, then you’ve must have seen the end credits sequence as Sif and Volstagg approach Taneleer Tivan, aka The Collector, with the Aether. From here we learn that there are in fact infinity stones in the Marvel Universe and the Aether is one of them, while another (the tesseract) is on Asgard. As the Asgardians maneuver through a cluttered room of strange, exotic artifacts from around the universe, a large bulbous pod looking item in a box is prominent on the screen. My initial thoughts were the Kree’s Supreme Intelligence, due to the bulbous, green, and slimy shape. However, that has a face and this most certain does not have any personified features whatsoever. My bad.

Instead, I’ve found a very interesting rumor, that I didn’t quite buy at first, until I remembered an article I posted on ComicUI {the post is below) several months before. [EDITOR’S NOTE: ComicUI is having server issues at the time of this writing, a link will be appropriated at a later date.] It stated that Adam Warlock would be seen in the Guardians of the Galaxy film, but in a suspended animation state. Anyone familiar with Mr. Warlock, knows he goes through regeneration cycles, much like Doctor Who, but he returns as himself each time. He enters a cocoon like state and comes back better than before. You can see Adam Warlock pictured above with Star-Lord and Nova to the left, with Ronan directly behind him. Adam Warlock is most integral to the Marvel Cosmic Universe, if anyone is.

Upon realizing this, some smart people said that gooey, green, bulbous pod was sporting some holes and tubes that resemble an Adam Warlock pod. Say what?! That’s pretty hardcore detecting right there. Very impressive indeed. Putting that theory along with my theory from several months ago, I’m really starting to think that Warlock is going to make an appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe much sooner than later. After all, he has been known to merge with the Infinity Stone known as Soul. We could be seeing an all out Infinity Gauntlet story over the next several years after all.

Adam Warlock is a Cocoon?

Adam Warlock has been a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy for a while now, except in the most recent Marvel NOW! series. He is most known throughout the Infinity Gauntlet series as someone who possesses one of the infinity gems, mind. Through this [soul] gem, he can pull people into it and essentially save their lives in harmful situations or create illusions in which they will live. This was very apparent in his appearance in Earth’s Mightiest Heroes along the other Guardians.

His removal from the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy film had left many a bit irate and not in the right state of…mind. However, recent rumor is to be believed (and something tells me to be very wary of this) we may be getting a glimpse at the man who is to be Warlock. We may not get him in action, but perhaps a glimpse at him in suspended animation. A tease at best, but better than nothing.

New X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Footage

Straight from the Xmenmovies Instagram page comes a teaser for the film with brand new footage. We get to see some new mutants (Blink, Warpath, Quicksilver) and some old ones (Iceman, Old Man Magneto). This quick clip doesn’t give much away, but definitely gets the blood pumping for the film. Marvel’s Next Animated Film To Get Confidential

Marvel has revealed that their next animated outing (that isn’t a motion comic) will be called Marvel’s  AVENGERS CONFIDENTIAL: BLACK WIDOW & PUNISHER. This sees the Black Widow bring in the Punisher to SHIELD and then be sent on a mission together to stop a terrorist organization called Leviathan (HYDRA anyone?). The art style seems visually similar to the Iron Man: Rise of Technovore anime film, which means Marvel must like that kind of style. From the screenshots, you can see the other Avengers make appearances too, including Captain Marvel in her latest attire and War Machine as well.

Read Marvel’s description of the film, “After interfering with a top secret mission, The Punisher is taken into custody by S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and Avenger Black Widow. At the orders of Director Nick Fury, Punisher and Black Widow are sent on a mission to stop Leviathan, a global terrorist organization that plans to sell stolen S.H.I.E.L.D. technology to the highest bidder. Now, the vigilante and spy must work together to prevent this technology from falling into the wrong hands. The fate of the world, and of the Avengers, hangs in the balance.”
