New GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Mobile Game

Haaaaaaave you heard about GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY yet? If not, you’ve been living under a rock and not paying enough attention to ComicUI. We’re excited for the movie to release at the end of this month and now they have a new game released for iOS to help you get excited too.

The game is called Guardians of the Galaxy: The Universal Weapon and can be picked up on the iTunes store for $4.99. Now, I understand that is a steep price for a game but it seems to be chock full of characters from the Marvel cosmic universe, including ones in the upcoming film. Who doesn’t want to shoot bad guys as Rocket and then beat them up with Groot? Exactly. The title also stems from Ronan, the accuser’s hammer, the Universal Weapon. This may give away some plot details for the upcoming film, or could be generated specifically for the game, we’re not sure.

As a bonus, there are NO in-app purchases and an internet connection is not required. This may help justify the price point, rather than having to chuck more dollar bills at the game to progress.

Official Images from AVENGERS 2: AGE OF ULTRON Arrive

After showing us Ultron for the first time, Entertainment Weekly is giving us even more with the first official stills from the upcoming movie. We get to see Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Hawkeye, Black Widow, The Hulk, Nick Fury, and War Machine return to the big screen, as well as adding Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver to the roster.

I’ll tell you right now, this movie appears to be a huge improvement in cinematic scope than the previous Avengers film. Seeing as that was my largest complaint against the biggest super hero movie to date, then this only confirms I’ll be that much more in love.

First Image of Ultron Revealed

Straight from Entertainment Weekly’s cover, we get Iron Man, Captain America, and Ultron! Plus many of his minions. Kevin Feige Confirms ANT-MAN in Good Shape

Kevin Feige may not be a household name for many people but he’s been the driving force behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe and continues to do so, even in times of presumed turmoil. Since the departure of Edgar Wright from ANT-MAN (something I’m actually enthused about), there has been much speculation about the future of the film. Recently, IGN got down to business with Feige and asked why Peyton Reed (Yes, Man) is a good choice for the movie. The interview is as follows.

“Number one – thank you for asking the question in that way, which is doing what we’re doing which is thinking about the movie and the end result of the movie,” said Kevin Feige when IGN asked the Marvel Studios producer about the drama surrounding Ant-Man, its former director Edgar Wright and his replacement. “Peyton [Reed] is someone that I’ve been a fan of for a long time. People may not remember, though probably your readers remember, that he was attached to Fantastic Four more than 10 years ago. We spent a lot of time together…  and I got along with Peyton very, very well and he had awesome ideas and an awesome vision for the movie, and for various reasons he ended up leaving that movie…” The Marvel Studios president continued, “He’s come in to meet on a lot of our movies over the years, in particular Guardians of the Galaxy. He had a lot of awesome things to say on Guardians. But James [Gunn] had a slightly more solid take that was of interest to us. But Peyton was always on our lists, and so when this happened and Edgar [Wright] said ‘Not for me’ we met with a handful of people, but Peyton was always one that I thought would be great.”emh_ant-man

“It was not a slam-dunk that he would just step into it and do it,” added Kevin Feige. “He wanted to be sure that he was wasn’t just inheriting something or following someone else’s lead. Or wasn’t inheriting something that the evil studio had watered down to be something bad. I kept saying, ‘You can either read what’s online, or come in and talk to us and look at all this stuff.’ He looked at everything, he talked with us, and he said ‘Number one, I agree with the direction you’re going in. And number two, I can add to it.’ And he has – the movie is in as good a shape as it’s ever been right now. It’s still very much in the spirit of what Edgar’s original pitch was and the entire template of the movie is what Edgar set out and originally came and pitched us maybe eight years ago now. But it’s on its way to being the absolute best version of what that movie could have been. Peyton is really, really wonderful, and will be proving that soon enough. As I said to the Comic-Con audience a few years ago, ‘You might not have heard of Joe and Antony Russo, [who directed this year’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier] but you’re going to be big fans of them soon.’ And I’d say the same thing about Peyton Reed now.”

 

With this information coming from Feige, I’d agree that they don’t take hiring decisions lightly. The Russo’s were a risk, even going back to Jon Favreau who had Elf under his belt. I think Marvel will deliver another fantastic film and I’ll be there, a fan through and through.

JURASSIC WORLD Brochure Images

The latest brochure from the fictitious JURASSIC WORLD has leaked online in several images. It will appear in the movie for park goers who come see Dinosaurs like regular people go see Harry Potter at Disney. These images give us an idea of what kind of dinosaurs we’ll see at the park and some of the sponsors, like Coca Cola. After this movie though, I don’t think they’ll choose to endorse the island.

Read on as we keep our eyes out for dinosaurs in JURASSIC WORLD releasing in 2015.

UpperDeck’s Marvel Villains Legendary Expansion now available

Back in March, we reported that the next expansion for UpperDeck”s Marvel Legendary deck building game was going to be villain focused. It would keep the same core mechanics in place, but give us a chance to be the bad guys trying to fight the forces of good. This would also be a stand-alone expansion too, meaning it was essentially like buying the first game. All the cards are in the box and we get to play them without buying boosters. On top of that, it was later confirmed that the Villain”s set would be fully compatible with the original Marvel Legendary and its three expansions, Dark City (Marvel Knights/X-Men), Fantastic Four, and Paint the Town Red (Spider-Man).

This new set, with villains and heroes alike, definitely open up the game to entirely new interpretations. There are many times in the comics where villains need to work with the heroes to defeat larger threats, such as Spider-Man and Venom against Carnage, or Magneto and the X-men take on Apocalypse. The possibilities are now endless and they”re also available for purchase.

I picked up my set at a local game store over the holiday and instantly busted it out when I got home to see all the new cards, artwork, and rules. Needless to say, 500 cards and one kick ass how do you check your credit score for free can stand in for money, but it is not. playmat later, I”m impressed. We”ll be testing it out this coming week at the office (as someone else bought it too) and give you a report next week. Until then, here”s some pictures of the game and the press release.

Leaked BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE Script

There have been tons of rumors and casting speculations surrounding the upcoming BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE movie. Beyond the confirmed images of Batman and Superman, news sites have linked Jason Mamoa to Aquaman, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to John Stewart (green lantern), and other small characters such as Victor Zsasz, Nightwing, and Carrie Kelly (Robin from The Dark Knight Returns).

This week, a leaked version of the first draft of the script landed in my hands and I’ve been perusing it on my own time, trying to see what its all about. I cannot vouch for the validity of this script, except that Kevin Smith confirmed he did not write a fake draft to throw off news sites/fanboys. What I can tell you, is that from this script, it appears to be a first draft. There is no official title on the front page and does not include any rewrites that are happening by Chris Terrio ( Argo). All of the characters above are included in the screenplay, and even if this isn’t the final movie…its a damn enjoyable read. I was able to vividly imagine the scenes as they played out. Even some of the most recent images leaked by on-site photogs depict filming of some of these scenes. Yes, I’d probably watch this without any hesitation.

It isn’t all rainbows and butterflies though, as the screenplay does include some pretty basic dialog. This is probably where the rewrites will need to come in and clean up the overall play between characters. It wasn’t painful, but we’re expecting gold when this movie airs in 2016, and this is juvenile at best. Also, I do fret for non-DC comics readers, as they quickly introduce characters without backgrounds. Marvel has done the opposite of such, giving us individual movies before team ups, but perhaps a change in formula is what DC/WB needs to break out and be noticed. As I was once told, “you can only break out of prison that way once, from then on its closed off and can’t be used again.” A fitting description on how to make super hero movies.

Throwback Thursday: Vin Diesel and Marvel

I was taking a look back through some articles from a year ago today, and saw that we got our first glimpses at Harry Osborne and Electro from the AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 (our review of the film tells you how that went), and came across the initial thoughts of Vin Diesel meeting with Marvel.

This included a photo of him beside the Avengers and saying the word ‘vision’ in his description of the visit. This sparked mad rumors in our mind, leading us along a false trail. We’d later come to learn that Diesel is in fact Groot in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and after watching the early preview this week, I can confirm that no one else could ever be Groot except VD. Take a look at some of our early speculations and wild theories from last year when Vin visited Marvel. Thankfully, we were wrong.

2 Fast 2 Marvelous: Vin Diesel Up For a Marvel Movie? (PHOTO)

Vin Diesel is what I like to refer to as a one-note actor. He doesn’t bring a lot of range to roles and has been sticking to franchises that tend to work for his talents (even if it is just one trick pony). However, as of late, Vinny has been touting some meetings with Marvel and leaving the rest up to our active imaginations. Today, he posted an image to his Facebook page maybe hinting at where he could be headed.

“Marvel meeting today, only the people in the room can tell you what was discussed…P.s. Thanks to Our page, for pushing to make it happen… you know I get tunnel vision with my work… and after that meeting today… wow!”

First thing we all think about is what Marvel film would Diesel be trying to get his foot in? Maybe they reached out to him first. Only they know, but instantly the list of heroes/villains he could play go through our head. Although never one to be an antagonist, Diesel has always played the anti-hero. Someone who isn’t good, but we’re rooting for him anyways. The biggest story is that he could be the Vision, an android created by Ultron who was created by Hank Pym. He has been a big part of the Avengers since the 60′s and creating this character on screen wouldn’t be a stretch. It is worth noting that in his statement, Diesel specifically says the word ‘vision’ albeit in a very passive way.

The image posted above presents another interesting theory, that he could in fact be Giant Man/Ant Man/Hank Pym, a brilliant man with a troubled personal life who has been in the Avengers since the comics were started. We know for a fact Ant-Man is the first Phase 3 film after Avengers 2 in 2015. Written by Edgar Wright, there has been test footage from it all over the internet. Although no casting or true production has begun on the film, I think it will need some star power to pull the premise of the film into the wider audiences. My personal theory on the film is that it will follow the second Ant-Man books, about Scott Lang, a thief who steals the Ant-Man suit and uses it for personal gain but obtains a conscience along the way and disavows his evil ways. This storyline was covered in an episode of Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes from Season 2 now on Netflix.

Secondly, it may not be movie related at all. Diesel is known for the Riddick and Fast & Furious series film, which leads me to speculate they may want to incorporate those into a comic series as well. Telling more stories of Riddick as he ventures from planet to planet running from space bounty hunters would lead to some great stories for the comic medium. They wouldn’t be confined by the practicality of film making and mini-series based on films are big right now. The movie rumors could always be a decoy for these talks as well.

Lastly, it may be nothing at all. Just sweet nothings and could end up going nowhere. It all depends on the factors involved to see if anything comes out of this relationship Marvel and Vin Diesel seem to be striking up. Social media is the hype machine that creates talk and keeps people in the forefront of everyone’s minds. This could be a clever ploy by both studios to see what people are talking about and track the popular topics coming from the surrounding buzz. Only time will tell on this one guys, lets hope we hear more at SDCC at the end of the month!

Video: DAREDEVIL Starts Filming in New York

Without any fanfare or spectacle, Marvel has initiated filming of the upcoming DAREDEVIL series for Netflix in New York. The series has cast Charlie Cox (Stardust) as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, Vincent D’Onofrio (Men in Black) as the Kingpin, Rosario Dawson (Sin City) as an unidentified woman, and finally, Elden Henson (Hunger Games) as Foggy Nelson. With the main cast nailed down, we’re unsure to the plot of the film (although Daredevil can’t stray too far from his basics) and when we’ll see any footage (maybe SDCC if this gets done!).

However, the first camera phone footage of the filming shows a young child, presumably Matt Murdock when he loses his sight during a toxic waste spill into his eyes. You can hear at 10 seconds in, the boy yelling “I can’t see!” several times. It also appears the truck has turned over and a traffic accident has happened, paralleling the origins of Daredevil’s enhanced senses. If you notice the surroundings of the footage and photos below, you can also make out the time frame seeming to be 1970’s  or early 80’s (please correct me if I’m wrong).

DAREDEVIL will hit Netflix sometime in 2015 and will be joined by Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Jessica Jones on the streaming format, ending with THE DEFENDERS afterwards.

Review: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Preview

Note: This review is for the 17 minute preview on July 7, not the feature length film.

Today, IMAX, Disney, and Marvel hosted a 17 minute preview of their upcoming GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY film and I had the pleasure of attending it nearby. Now, you might be curious why they’d only show us 17 minutes instead of the whole movie, and to answer that question…is that they simply weren’t done with the film till 2 hours prior to our screening. This was confirmed by James Gunn’s twitter today as he said the last shots were finalized today.

Instead of focusing on what we didn’t get, I’d like to go ahead and confirm what small preview I did see was spectacular. They didn’t waste time and jumped right into a longer introduction of the Guardians a la John C. Reilly in the Xandar police station. This extended preview helped cement the characters more in the pre-established Marvel universe, as well as showcasing us their personalities to us.

This was followed by 10 minutes of the Guardians in the Kyln, the prison of the cosmos. This longer scene contained action, humor, and lots of ‘fuck yeah!’ moments that made me root for the characters, despite their criminal status. It showcases how alien, yet familiar the location and characters will be in the film, while definitely delivering on all fronts. It doesn’t sacrifice other aspects for non-essential humor/action, which made the 17 minutes definitely feel like it only last five.

I have to admit, that Rocket portrayed by Bradley Cooper was the most brilliant decision ever, as well as Vin Diesel’s Groot. These two really are the heart of the film and bring these two alien creatures to life. Star-Lord and Gamora play second seat to those two in the preview, but rest assured they will definitely be instrumental to the rest of the film, especially Star-Lord/Chris Pratt. Drax was the only one who I felt got short changed, but it seems there was some history between him and Star-Lord prior to this scene. Everyone looks visually incredible, including Rocket’s close-ups and the way Groot grows and expands parts of his body for weapons/shields.

Without spoiling the scenes, I can say that my face was lit up with a giant grin the entire time, as well as silently fist pumping for the Guardians almost every minute. As the short preview dwindled down, they did a trailer-esque vibe playing Cherry Bomb from the soundtrack. It gave us better looks at Ronan and Yondu in quick succession, and some of the crazy/amazing scenes we can expect to take place on Knowhere. Needless to say, if I wasn’t already excited for this film to premiere next month, this preview only cranked it to 11.

ComicUI is hooked on a feeling and you should be too.
