Exclusive: Brian Lau talks STAUNCH AMBITION with ComicUI

0

A few months ago, we let you know about STAUNCH AMBITION, a graphic novel coming from the minds of Brian Lau, John McNicol, and Tyler Thull. Since our initial press release for the book, they’ve managed to add artists Freddie Williams II, Khoi Pham, and Erwin Arroza to the fray, as well as songs by Elements of Kadence, Jason Conley, & Rodney Elliott.. There are not enough words to say how much time, energy, and talent is going into STAUNCH AMBITION when it launches.

To really dig into STAUNCH AMBITION, we got in touch with Brian Lau, Chief Creative Officer of the graphic novel, and gave him some questions leading up to the big release. In fact, one of Chris’ submissions to a poster naming contest was chosen, so ComicUI is right there in the fold!

Feel free to let them know if you have any questions or want to sponsor STAUNCH AMBITION in any way. We’ll be following them all the way till release, that much we can promise.

ComicUI: How did this project come about? Staunch isn’t a word used very often in today’s language, what drew you to use that in the title?

Brian Lau: It started in college when I needed to do a comic book cover for an assignment.  So as a starting point I used a character my brother had created for the superhero roll playing game called Champions. For years this story’s title was HalfLife. I abandoned that mainly because the story had changed dramatically and there already was a successful video game with that name. I was looking at several words that fit the story like Epoch, Verve, Infinite Epoch, and so on. Epoch came out of the question after doing an internet search to find it is the name of an extra cheesy Sy-Fy movie.  When talking about which title to use with my co-worker at the time, Darren Joiner, he pointed out that the name Staunch Ambition had the word Station inside it and he could do something cool with that as a design. So that settled it. Darren worked up several black and white title designs and then I tweaked and colored it into what you see today.

ComicUI: What genre would you classify ‘Staunch Ambition’ as? Would you say it’s more Science Fiction, Superhero, or some blend of both?

Brian Lau: This is Science Fiction mixed with Supernatural Fiction, not a superhero story.

ComicUI: Is this story akin to any other science fiction (or Superhero) story out there? Ex: the Matrix meets Star Wars. Superman on Battlestar Galactica?

Brian Lau: Yes, I would explain it as a mix of Star Wars, The Matrix, Blade Runner, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.  Well maybe Cuckoo’s Nest is more just me.

ComicUI: How did this project evolve from an idea in the back of your mind, to a full-time project?

Brian Lau: I had kicked it around for years and tried to collaborate with several people but it just never went past the preliminary stage.  And looking back I’m happy that it didn’t because the story has become more mature. When both the company I had been working with for 18 yrs was going out of business and I inherited some money, I decided that it was now or never.  So having real money to invest into this transformed it from idea to reality.  Now this project is kicking me around, much harder.

ComicUI: In addition to working on Staunch Ambition, you’re also working as a full-time Illustrator do you have a schedule for working on ‘Staunch Ambition’, or do you just work on it when the ideas hit?

Brian Lau: I’m either working my day job or working on this book.  Once in awhile I sleep, shower, eat, spend time with family.  I bought a Cintiq Companion which is a portable art tablet and a full fledged computer so I can work on this anywhere.  I’m writing these answers right now on my iPad in a freezing cold car waiting for my son as he is in choir.

ComicUI: When can we expect the project to launch or will it become live in phases/chapters?

Brian Lau: Right now I have no deadline so I’m focusing on trying to make it a quality book.  My plan is to create a 16 page preview issue and start hitting conventions and stores to try and build an audience. The first issue will be out in 2015.

ComicUI: What inspired the format of this project?

Brian Lau: I thought about what to call it a bit. You could say that it is a comic book series (and maybe I should).  But for many people “comic book” conjures up the idea of a super hero story. Characters with giant muscle, guns, and boobs with a certain style of art and we are not doing that. This is more a supernatural Sy-Fy novel with no pencils and inks but full color paintings. And I’m not saying that comic books are all as I described above. I know better but unfortunately many people still do not get this.

And I’m not saying that comic books are all as I described above. I know better but unfortunately many people still do not get this.

ComicUI: ‘Staunch Ambition’ stars an Android named Azarus, but would you say this is more the story of Azarus, or ‘The Ambition’ (The Ship)?

Brian Lau: The station is pretty cool and a very critical part of the story.  However, we will be focusing on the characters more throughout the series. Azarus is one of several main characters and you will grow to love him more than your own pets! He is a genetically engineered worker: an organic mix with human and some animal DNA created to serve but he will become much more than expected.

ComicUI: How does Rielle’s story play into ‘Staunch Ambition’? Will she ever cross paths with Azarus? Why pair a human woman with a seemingly male Android?

Brian Lau: Rielle is a lead supervisor on the space station the Ambition. Rielle will be forced into facing the reality behind Staunch’s success. In short, they do cross paths considering that she is one of Azarus’s bosses.

ComicUI: How difficult was it to write the books?

Brian Lau: I have worked hard my whole life and this graphic novel is the most difficult but exciting project I have ever worked on.  Partly because it is the first one I have done, which means I have had to do a lot of research and build everything from scratch. I hope it gets easier as I go forward.

ComicUI: How did you come in contact with Tyler Thull? What made him the right artist for this project?

Brian Lau: I meet Tyler through a Facebook art group and loved his full color paintings.  Because I wanted to do something different than the typical comic book style he was the perfect choice for Staunch Ambition. Finding the right artist was one of the most difficult things I’ve had to do on this book and anyone who has had to do this knows what I’m talking about.

ComicUI: You’ve added other artists, such as Khoi Pham and Freddie Williams II. How does working with mainstream or noticeable artists change your perspective on the craft?

Brian Lau: They have both been great to work with and I’m very happy with the covers they did. Freddie was an amazing help.  He offered me so much advice and answered several questions I had about the process. His cover turned out so good that I’ve decided to make it the cover to issue #01, just wait till you see it!  It’s as good, if not better than, any Arthur Adams or Barry Windsor Smith piece.

ComicUI: Have you decided on a publisher yet?

Brian Lau: As I start hitting the Comic Con’s one of the things I plan on doing is looking at different publishers.  I’m fully prepared to self publish but may go with an already established publisher as long as it make sense and the quality of the book isn’t compromised.

Updated Marvel Phase 3 Release Schedule

0

We got him! Spider-Man is in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He’s not fully owned by Marvel, but the deal with Sony should see more of him appearing in Marvel starting possibly as soon as 2016. With his appearance possibly in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR setting up continuity, we will officially get SPIDER-MAN in theaters again July 28, 2017.

If you’ve been following any Marvel Phase 3 news, you’ll know thats the same day THOR: RAGNAROK was planned to release, however, this bit of news has thrown the schedule into disarray. This new addition to Marvel’s cinematic universe also changes the release dates of Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Inhumans. Avengers: Infinity War parts 1 and 2 are not affected, thankfully!

Marvel’s “Thor: Ragnarok” will hit theaters November 3, 2017. The following year, Marvel’s “Black Panther” will make its way to theaters on July 6, 2018, and Marvel’s “Captain Marvel” on November 2, 2018. Finally, Marvel’s “Inhumans” will now debut in theaters July 12, 2019.
The previously announced dates for Marvel’s “Avengers: Infinity War Part 1” and “Avengers: Infinity War Part 2” on May 4, 2018 and May 3, 2019, respectively, remain unchanged.
I have to say I’m sad Inhumans is now in 2019, but beggars can’t be choosers, right?

OFFICIAL: Sony and Marvel reach Spider-Man Agreement

0

It is true, yes. This is no rumor! SPIDER-MAN will be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a unique agreement between Sony and Marvel Studios. The official press release is below for you to read, but I’d like to point out some details.

First and foremost, you should not, “Sony Pictures will continue to finance, distribute, own and have final creative control of the Spider-Man films.” As my friend Mike put it, its like Spider-Man having divorced parents and joint custody, but its not necessarily a bad thing. Great kids come from these kinds of homes! It’ll be interesting to see how this works after the first solo Spidey film is released.

Spider-Man is releasing in 2017, which actually rearranges the planned Phase 3 movie release line up, which we’ll cover in our next post. This is probably the most bittersweet part of the deal, as it affects my most anticipated property, The Inhumans, but also means we don’t wait till 2019 for our first good Spider-Man film since the Raimi sequel.

Lastly, the announced Sinister Six film is still in development. It may not release next November like we expected, but perhaps may become the first film to star the webslinger in the Marvel Universe. Drew Goddard, the man in charge of Sinister Six, already has a working relationship with Marvel from DAREDEVIL. This is speculation, but a good lead.

Judging from my social media blowing up and phone messages when I woke up, Sony made a great move and millions of people are happy. Are you one of those people?

[alert variation=”alert-success”]

Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marvel Studios announced today that Sony is bringing Marvel into the amazing world of Spider-Man.

Under the deal, the new Spider-Man will first appear in a Marvel film from Marvel’s Cinematic Universe (MCU). Sony Pictures will thereafter release the next installment of its $4 billion Spider-Man franchise, on July 28, 2017, in a film that will be co-produced by Kevin Feige and his expert team at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago. Together, they will collaborate on a new creative direction for the web slinger. Sony Pictures will continue to finance, distribute, own and have final creative control of the Spider-Man films.

Marvel and Sony Pictures are also exploring opportunities to integrate characters from the MCU into future Spider-Man films.

The new relationship follows a decade of speculation among fans about whether Spider-Man – who has always been an integral and important part of the larger Marvel Universe in the comic books – could become part of the Marvel Universe on the big screen. Spider-Man has more than 50 years of history in Marvel’s world, and with this deal, fans will be able to experience Spider-Man taking his rightful place among other Super Heroes in the MCU.

Bob Iger, Chairman and CEO, The Walt Disney Company said: “Spider-Man is one of Marvel’s great characters, beloved around the world. We’re thrilled to work with Sony Pictures to bring the iconic web-slinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which opens up fantastic new opportunities for storytelling and franchise building.”

“We always want to collaborate with the best and most successful filmmakers to grow our franchises and develop our characters. Marvel, Kevin Feige and Amy, who helped orchestrate this deal, are the perfect team to help produce the next chapter of Spider-Man,” said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment. “This is the right decision for the franchise, for our business, for Marvel, and for the fans.”

“Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios share a love for the characters in the Spider-Man universe and have a long, successful history of working together. This new level of collaboration is the perfect way to take Peter Parker’s story into the future,” added Doug Belgrad, president, Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group.

“I am thrilled to team with my friends at Sony Pictures along with Amy Pascal to produce the next Spider-Man movie,” said Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. “Amy has been deeply involved in the realization on film of one of the world’s most beloved characters. Marvel’s involvement will hopefully deliver the creative continuity and authenticity that fans demand from the MCU. I am equally excited for the opportunity to have Spider-Man appear in the MCU, something which both we at Marvel, and fans alike, have been looking forward to for years.”

Spider-Man, embraced all over the world, is the most successful franchise in the history of Sony Pictures, with the five films having taken in more than $4 billion worldwide.

Sif Returns to Agents of SHIELD

0

Do you remember in Season 1 of Marvel’s AGENTS OF SHIELD when Jaimie Alexander reprised her role as Sif from Asgard? That two part episode was pretty cool and set the scene for Evil Ward to come forward later. Now, Sif will be coming back to Midgard in Season 2 but in a different manner.

She’ll arrive on Earth with short-term memory loss. While Sif will know that she’s an Asgardian, she’ll have no clue who Thor, Odin, or any other Marvel Universe mainstays are. Will she see the Agents as friends or foes? My guess is friends, as they’ll have Inhumans to deal with on the other hand.

“It’ll give us some much-needed humor in a season that’s been full of betrayal and death,” Executive Producer Jeffrey Bell told TV Insider. “Sif can’t even recall who she came here from Asgard to stop, but Agent Coulson [Clark Gregg] and his team will try to help her figure all that out.”

Fortunately, the memories that Sif retains will help the agents deal with the extra-ordinary dealings keeping that other hand busy—namely, the Inhumans. They are alien creations after all.

“We’ve been dealing a lot with space aliens and Inhumans in our last few episodes—things our Earth-bound heroes just don’t know much about,” Bell further told the news site. “They need help understanding what’s really going on. Sif’s memory—what’s left of it—will come in very handy.”

We’re not sure when she appears, but we’ll let you know when to catch Sif’s appearance in SHIELD!

Marvel’s DAREDEVIL Teaser Trailer

0

The day has come where we get our first glimpse at Marvel’s DAREDEVIL, pun unintended. A Netflix Original Series, Daredevil will follow Matt Murdock as he is a lawyer by day and a masked vigilante by night.

Premiering on April 10 on Netflix, all 13 episodes will be available for you to watch in one sitting, and you can count me in. As Marvel delves into the street level heroes, it looks like we’ll be seeing a lot of history from Daredevil and some bloody, brutal episodes.

Has the first trailer gotten you hyped for Marvel’s attempt at Daredevil? It has me.

Carrie-Anne Moss Joins AKA JESSICA JONES

0

In another casting announcement, Carrie Anne Moss (The Matrix) has joined the cast of AKA JESSICA JONES, the Marvel and Netflix series.

Her character is not given a name, but a description: Moss plays a no-nonsense woman who could prove a powerful ally to Jessica…if Jessica doesn’t completely alienate her first.

Whoever this is, will be interesting and I’m glad to see AKA JESSICA JONES fill out.

Do you have any theories on who Trinity could be playing? We don’t yet, but we’ll keep all news updates here.

[alert variation=”alert-error”]

Marvel and Netflix are proud to announce that Carrie-Anne Moss will star in “Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones,” an all-new 13-episode series premiering on Netflix in 2015 following “Marvel’s Daredevil.”

Moss will star opposite Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), David Tennant (Kilgrave), Mike Colter (Luke Cage), and Rachael Taylor (Patricia “Trish” Walker) in the Netflix original series. “Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones” was developed by Executive Producer/Showrunner Melissa Rosenberg.

“Throughout her career, Carrie-Anne has embodied a wide range of characters in a compelling and relatable way and I have no doubt she will bring that talent to A.K.A. Jessica Jones,” said Rosenberg.
“Carrie-Anne has proven her ability to play complex characters with deep and layered inner lives,” said Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer/Marvel’s Head of Television. “Her interaction with Jessica Jones will be one of the many highlights of the series.”

Moss starred as Trinity in all three films of the Matrix trilogy, and in her 25-year career she has also starred in “Memento,” “Chocolat,” and “Disturbia,” as well as more than two dozen other feature films. Past TV credits include roles on “Vegas,”  and “Crossing Lines.”

Super Bowl XLIX Movie Trailers

0

Did you watch the Super Bowl for the football game or the commercials? I’m always a fan of the commercials, especially the movie trailers. Its always been a good time, as I look forward to big studios bringing out their summer promotions. However, 2015 was a huge letdown. There was no Marvel, DC, or really any big movie trailer release last night, as well as a plethora of depressing commercials. Wheres the fun in that? Its gone, thats where.

Maybe next year will be better, but here’s a rundown of the trailers worth watching from yesterday’s Super Bowl XLIX!

Jurassic World

Tomorrowland

Furious 7

Seventh Son

Kingsmen: The Secret Service

Minions

Terminator: Genisys

LEGO Jurassic World and Avengers Confirmed

0

YES! A million times, yes! LEGO games are one of the best video games available and in 2015 we’ll be giving two of my favorite properties the LEGO treatment.

First up, Warner Bros. and TellTale games have confirmed that LEGO Jurassic World will be arriving this summer. This was originally teased at the end of LEGO Batman 3 and will be releasing this June, just in time for the Jurassic World movie.

“Following the epic storylines of Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park andJurassic Park III, as well as the highly anticipated Jurassic WorldLEGO Jurassic World is the first videogame where players will be able to relive and experience all four Jurassic films. The game will be available in June for the Xbox One, all-in-one games and entertainment system, the Xbox 360 games and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®4 and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment systems, PlayStation®Vita handheld entertainment system, the Wii U™ system from Nintendo, Nintendo 3DS™ hand-held system, and Windows PC.”

Secondly, we’ll be getting LEGO Marvel’s Avengers. Yes, we have a Marvel Superheroes game already (which I’ve played a bajillion times), but this seems to focus more on the cinematic side of the universe, while hopefully expanding on the superior original game. This will probably be released October-November range for a Holiday purchase.

“Avengers Assemble! Experience the first console videogame featuring characters and storylines from the blockbuster film Marvel’s The Avengers and the much anticipated sequel Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, and morePlay as the most powerful Super Heroes in their quest to save humanity. The game will be available in fall 2015 for the Xbox One, all-in-one games and entertainment system, the Xbox 360 games and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®4 and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment systems, PlayStation®Vita handheld entertainment system, the Wii U system from Nintendo, Nintendo 3DS hand-held system, and Windows PC.”

While we have no screen shots or trailers, we can give you the LEGO Marvel’s Avengers logo to hold you over. We’ll be following these as more information arrives.

Hellcat to join AKA JESSICA JONES

0

It seems that AKA JESSICA JONES is moving quicker than I anticipated. From the initial casting of Kristyn Ritter, we’ve gained Luke Cage (Mike Colter), the Purple Man (David Tennant), and as of today, Marvel has cast Rachael Taylor to play Trish Walker. Walker also goes by another name in the comics of Hellcat.

Taylor has appeared in TV series including Crisis, Charlie’s Angels, and Grey’s Anatomy, as well as films such as Any Questions for Ben? and The Darkest Hour. I’ve not seen her, but here’s what Marvel says makes Hellcat part of the show:

“After a tragic ending to her short-lived super hero stint, Jessica Jones is rebuilding her personal life and career as a detective who gets pulled into cases involving people with extraordinary abilities in New York City. Trish is a syndicated radio talk show host, former model and child TV star known to her adoring fans as ‘Patsy’ Walker. As Jessica Jones’ closest friend, Trish helps her embark on the most dangerous case of Jessica’s career. The character of Patricia Walker has roots dating back to 1944 with her first appearance in MISS AMERICA MAGAZINE #2, and in the comics Walker donned the super hero identity of Hellcat in 1976.”

Will Walker don the Hellcat outfit throughout the series? Maybe she will, but perhaps she won’t?
