BATMAN v. SUPERMAN Teaser Trailer

0

UPDATE: The official HD trailer has been released by Zack Snyder via twitter. Check it out below!

Despite best efforts, the full teaser trailer for BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE has leaked. It is a camera phone version with what appears to be Spanish subtitles Filmed in a theater, the teaser gives us a feel for the actual darkness of this film. Does Warner Bros. and Zack Snyder even like the light? Either way, this low quality version shouldn’t be held against the film.

With the IMAX preview coming on Monday and the this version of the teaser on Tuesday, maybe this leak will help Warner Bros. do the right thing and release a high quality version early. It worked for Marvel and the Age of Ultron trailer, didn’t it?

Well, here it is. Just don’t complain about the quality yet.

ComicUI Reviews Marvel’s DAREDEVIL

Spoiler Free Overview

Marvel has taken a character who was blindsided by the emergence of ‘realistic’ superhero films in the early 2000’s and reinvented them. Although the character remains Daredevil throughout, its the portrayal of Matt Murdock by Charlie Cox that transcends this series beyond everything currently available and places it near the Nolan Batman films, while still remaining firmly grounded in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Even if some parts feel very episodic throughout the series, the continuing narrative and evolution of the characters from start to finish only show that Marvel doesn’t constantly need to be light hearted  and full of jokes to also be fun. The word ‘gritty’ doesn’t apply here, Daredevil is the most human of the Marvel cinematic products and sets a bar for it’s fellow shows that we can only hope they live up to, if not surpass entirely. This is Marvel’s Daredevil, in the end, it truly belongs to all of us as we welcome him with open arms into the stable full of metal suits, magical hammers, and war relics who continue to save their world.

The Detailed Analysis (still kinda spoiler free)

Marvel’s Daredevil was always going to be a risk. Starting in the Trial of the Incredible Hulk TV movie, and from the bad taste left in the 2003 version starring Ben Affleck, our experience with Matt Murdock and his alter ego have always left something to be desired. Now that we’re here, less than a week since the show has been released on Netflix, we’re starting to see that Marvel isn’t a one trick pony, but an entity that knows its characters and the visual medium inside and out.

To start, lets talk about casting choices. Charlie Cox (Stardust) was kind of an unknown actor prior to his turn as the masked vigilante and from this, ironically, he will become something people desire to see more of. Had we received an older, more experienced Matt Murdock, we wouldn’t have been able to see the young, brash, cocksure lawyer side of the character. Even throughout his nights as the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen, Cox easily convinced me that he is a turmoiled man who struggles with these battles of street justice. Also, I would like to applaud his turn as a blind person. It wasn’t quite as derpy or noticeable as the Affleck version we were subjected to over a decade ago. It didn’t feel like a parody of the vision impaired.

Foggy Nelson and Karen Page really stepped up their game in this series as well. From Elden Henson (a bash brother from Might Ducks, btw) and Deborah Ann Woll (True Blood), they weren’t ancillary characters who interacted with Matt to give him a sense of friendship, but true characters to the Daredevil series itself. There were times we don’t even see the titular character, but strong performances by Henson and Woll really sold the show as being more than just about Daredevil’s rise to defender.

Wilson Fisk and his entourage were equally as developed and fascinating. With Vicent D’Onofrio being the Kingpin (although never referred to by that name), you could feel his size and eventual brutality in the character. His calm, collected rituals help build up what was once a troubled boy into a troublesome man. Hell, I thoroughly enjoyed every second Wesley was on screen, as he was a fun character to watch and unpredictable at best. And Vanessa, her journey as well felt natural and perfect, even though you felt at any minute she could be disposed of without notice.

Marvel’s version of Daredevil doesn’t waste time with a long exposited backstory of how the masked man came to exist, but gets right into it. A blinded youth who was saving an elderly man sets the stage for the next 13 hours. If you want more history of the character, it arrives over the season precisely when it means to. Letting us know the fate of Battlin’ Jack Murdock and the college years of Nelson and Murdock, avocados at law. We learn the stories of characters as they intertwine and get a rich history that serves as the baseline of Daredevil’s story.

However, at times, the series felt more episodic and wasteful of the great resources at hand. The early introduction of Claire Temple, the night nurse, soon gave way to her removed from the series, only returning much later for a few minutes. Even the episode which tells us how Matt came about to his fighting style and senses used Stick up in that short time span and then threw him away (possibly returning in the Iron Fist series). It was a shame to see some characters come and go quickly, as every death in the show made you want to follow more of their story.

From these minor flaws, the story of Daredevil and the Kingpin parallel each other beyond anything I imagined for either character. They start off relatively obscure, only whispers in the night, then through the introduction of love interests, start to lose everything around them, all under the claim of a betterment for Hell’s Kitchen. Everyone around them is slowly removed from the picture or alienated along the journey. This all culminates in a battle of good and evil, as both men are brought into the spotlight for various reasons. However, it is Daredevil’s ability to do what is good in the right way which makes him a character to root for, although at times you wish the malicious Fisk caught a break or two.

Visually, this series is beautiful and hypnotic and downright a treat to watch. From the fluorescent greens and blues, to the contrasting neon red lights that bathe the city and characters, there are times the cinematic quality of this show shines through, transcending it beyond anything on television. At times, Matt’s glasses look as if they were taken from the images of a comic book and placed on his face. Even the brief glimpse of Daredevil’s mental view is memorable and unique at the same time. You experience this show as you watch it.

Something to be mentioned is the humanity of Daredevil. He gets winded, his punches don’t knock people out in one go, and he gets hurts. A lot. We’ve grown so accustomed to our characters getting ‘hurt’ but not really, that we don’t see those consequences throughout the movies or shows, but in Daredevil, Marvel has really focused on how human and mortal he is. Watch the fight scene at the end of the second episode, you’ll know when and why.

In the end, the journey is exciting from the start to the finish. Two things I feel that could have served the show better is ending before the initial steam was lost, which happens about 9 hours into the show, and giving us the history of Wilson Fisk in between his childhood and then apparent rise to criminal overlord. In season 2, I’m sure Marvel will fix these minor missteps that occurred, but even with them, Daredevil is a much stronger start to the Defenders series than we could have ever imagined.

First Official ANT-MAN Trailer

0

The first official trailer for ANT-MAN, Marvel’s second movie of 2015, has landed. Other than the long teaser we saw before, this gives us more details on the film’s plot and even see some action scenes play out!

If you were worried about ANT-MAN not being a big enough hitter for Marvel (pun intended), you will definitely want to see this trailer. From breaking and entering, armies of ants, helicopter crashes, and a scene on a train, this movie looks different enough to be something huge. Along with the seriousness, a few jokes are sprinkled throughout, but make sure you stay through the end to see a scene that had me laughing more than I expected.

Directed by Peyton Reed, Ant-Man stars Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Corey Stoll, Evangeline Lilly, David Dastmalchian, Michael Pena, Bobby Cannavale, Abby Ryder Fortson, Judy Greer, Wood Harris John Slattery and Gregg Turkington with T.I. The film opens July 17, 2015.

SUICIDE SQUAD Cast Photo and Updates

0

SUICIDE SQUAD is the third film in the DC Cinematic Universe and is currently in production. From its unexpected announcement last year, and loss of Tom Hardy, this film’s pre-production has been fairly well shared through social media. Today, director David Ayer, has shared a photo of the entire Suicide Squad cast and given us a few more details than we originally had.

For the picture below, we’ll start doing names and roles for the film. From L – R are director David Ayer, Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flagg), Will Smith (Deadshot), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Killer Croc), Jay Hernandez (El Diablo), Karen Fukuhara (Plastique), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), Cara Delevingne (Enchantress), and Viola Davis (Amanda Waller).

Stopping there, we have 3 new additions to the cast and rumor is that they’ve been cast as well: (L to R) Adam Beach (Ravan), Jim Parrack (Deathstroke), and Ike Barinholtz (Hugo Strange).

From the looks of it, although we don’t have a Batman film lined up in the next 5 years of DC movies, they’re using his rogues gallery as a basis for SUICIDE SQUAD next year. Are you excited for the bad guys to do good?

FANTASTIC FOUR Images Reveals The Thing and More

0

FANTASTIC FOUR is coming out in August and now we have our first official look at The Thing played by Jamie Bell and some stretch action from Mr. Fantastic.

Courtesy of Empire, we see that Ben Grimm’s transformation to the rock-creature called The Thing will be very rocky-like indeed. Instead of the bright orange version played by Michael Chiklis in the pre-reboot films, we’re treated to a red clay like version with bumps and asymmetry all around. Its hard not to draw a connection to the Kronan’s from Thor: The Dark World (click for image).

Secondly, we see a bit of Miles Teller’s Reed Richards doing some stretching on a table. Its not much, but we’ve not seen his power in detail either. Overall, its a mixed bag of stills from the upcoming movie, but enough to get us by.

Are you excited for this new version of Marvel’s first family of superheroes?

DEADPOOL Officially Rated R

0

Fox’s DEADPOOL is currently filming in Vancouver and Ryan Reynolds is hyping the movie more than anyone else. If someone was made to embody the Merc with a Mouth, it is in fact Reynolds. From last week’s tweet that unveiled the costume, lots of rumors and speculation about the films’ rating have gone around.

Finally, today, on the day most pranks go live, Ryan Reynolds has confirmed via a YouTube video that the rating for DEADPOOL will in fact be R. Watch this interview that he has with Mario Lopez (and trust me, you’ll wanna stick through it) to see how they announce this special news.

This is also the first time we see the Deadpool costume in footage, and it looks WAY better on screen then it did in last week’s tweet. So if you’re excited for the movie, go eat yourself a chimichanga (and vote in this week’s poll)!

Howard the Duck’s True Identity Revealed

0

It has been 9 months since GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY graced the screens and within that time frame, I think all spoilers are out the window. If you’ve NOT seen it, read our review and then go watch it yourself, slacker! If you’ve still not seen it and don’t want certain characters spoiled, well too late. You probably read the title, and for that you get +5 exp today.

We digress. If you have seen any Marvel Studios film recently, you know that staying through the credits is the best thing you can do. Why? Because thats how Iron Man did it, thats how the other movies do it now, and its worked out pretty well so far. If you delve into our History of Marvel Studios – part 3 article that we did in collaboration with Pickled Comics, you can find out that from these end credit sequences, Marvel was able to build an entire universe in just 2 movies, Iron Man & The Incredible Hulk. Not only that, some of the best reveals happen after the movie is already over. Thor’s hammer, Thano’s smug mug, and most recently the twins from Winter Soldier. These end credit sequences are the things fans love and will go see every time. It worked for the Amazing Spider-Man 2, even though that cluster cuss was a disaster piece.

Howard the Duck

In Guardians of the Galaxy, we were treated to the Collector’s collection after being destroyed by the Power gem. There was a mess, Tivan was in disarray, and more importantly, his collectables had escaped. We see Cosmo the space dog trying to make him feel better, but that wasn’t even the shocking scene. HOWARD the effing DUCK was right there! Complete in CG animated form drinking a cosmo (not the dog) of some sort and being a smart ass like always. He was even voiced by the multitalented Seth Green. This was definitely a sight to behold, folks. No one saw it coming, especially after that 1980’s Howard movie that is probably the worst thing ever…as it sits on my shelf of movies.

Yet with this small sequence of the mallardy kind, a lot of fans missed the most important part. Howard the Duck is actually Tony Stark’s father.

Let that sink for a second. Need to sit down? Drink something hard? Ok, let’s get into this.

Howard the Duck is definitely an anthropomorphic duck. He’s sitting and talking and knows common speak. He’s also enjoying an alcoholic beverage while being snarky in an older style suit. Now if you remove “the duck” from the first part, it sounds like we’re describing Howard Stark as well, does it not?

Howard not the Duck

“But how!?” you’re exclaiming at your computer screen. Simple. The tesseract. Once Captain America was lost, Howard was able to find the Tesseract from the ocean and experiment on it. This would give him some exposure to the space/cosmic abilities of the cube and he probably did not use protection. Years later, he would be ‘lost’ in a tragic car accident that was created by HYDRA to remove him from SHIELD. But instead, I challenge you with this, that Howard Stark’s conscience was transported through space to a world of duck men. Thats right, his mind is in the body of a duck man.

Because of this experience and exposure to the tesseract would be exactly why the Collector would have Howard in his collection! He intimately knows one of the infinity stones and is one of a kind, a human mind in a duck man’s body. From his stylish 3 piece suit Howard is wearing at the end of Guardians, to his snarky attitude, and obvious love of hard drinks, it makes sense to connect the dots to leave Howard as a duck, light years away from Earth.

As the saying goes, if it quacks like a duck…its probably Howard Stark.

LUKE CAGE Gets Showrunner and 2016 Release

0

We just reported on Marvel’s DAREDEVIL today and have shared the production of AKA JESSICA JONES as well, but now we’r getting information regarding the 3rd Netflix feature, based on LUKE CAGE, played by Mike Colter (Halo: Nightfall).

The following press release has been announced by Marvel and definitely shows that they’re picking someone with crime drama talents under his belt to run, what I assume, will be a crime drama show. Not so much like DAREDEVIL or Jessica Jones will be, but more like a wrongfully accused convict in the really bad parts of New York trying to make it better. Maybe it will be like the other ones, but we’ll have to wait a full year to find out.

Read on, friends!
