ComicUI Reviews ANT-MAN

0

Marvel’s ANT-MAN has been unleashed upon the world this weekend and we were lucky enough to see it last night. Before we begin, I feel it is important to lay down some things about the film before going in. This is the last movie in Marvel’s Phase 2 series of films. Many assumed it was AGE OF ULTRON, but it was not. Also, Edgar Wright walked away from this film due to creative differences, and despite many people liking him, he can GTFO and I could care less. Now that those are out of the way, lets begin! A cage-less, Spoiler Free review.

ANT-MAN is another bold move for Marvel and not just because it is a relatively unknown character, but because how it handles the Ant-Man mantle. Yet again, what I call strategic storytelling pays off for the company and helps make this movie larger than life. The film really excels in expanding on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s past stories, their present dangers, and some crazy awesome ideas that could be used in the future. This helps ANT-MAN feel a lot like Iron Man (2008) in the way it is grounded and character drive, but doesn’t ignore how other Marvel events have set everything in motion.

Back to the actual Ant-Man, we’re given a story involving 2 families, the Pym clan and Scott Lang. This is the first time we’ve come across main characters who have children, but not the first story about family (Thor is a good film about that). From this we get an emotional tale that culminates in a visually exciting third act that definitely gives me hopes to see ANT-MAN 2 sooner than later.

Paul Rudd as Scott Lang is inspired casting. He isn’t overly humorous as the trailers have us to believe, but convincing enough that we feel his arrogance is drives a lot of the choices he makes, rather than standard criminal activity. His evolution over time isn’t strong enough in his first outing, but can definitely be improved upon as he appears later on in the MCU. Hank Pym, although we wish we knew more about the mystical Pym Particles and his Ant-Man days from the 80’s, does give us a mentor that Lang needs. His own broken relationship with his daughter and even the antagonist, Darren Cross, drive most of the story and puts everyone in their current predicaments (although indirectly, I feel).

This Marvel film suffers from the same thing every other one does, a villain that feels under developed throughout the span of this story. From egotistical CEO to a suited up Yellowjacket, there are a lot of blanks in arc, development, and story that we’re left to fill over time. He is not the weakest of the villains, due to his proximity to Hank Pym and the trope of scorned children exacting revenge with unhinged “successes”, rather than talks of feelings. Its very reminiscent of the Stane story from Iron Man. This man is a flawed person with end goals that aren’t as bad of a stretch as say, Ronan.

Lastly, the visual aspect of this film is unlike anything I’ve seen on screen. The macro cinematography brings this micro world to life and its fun to take a look at a world we’ve usually been seeing from bigger POVs. We’ve gone from films about proverbial Gods to one made for ants. He needs to be at least 3 times bigger to compete with them! But seriously, this movie goes out of its way to look different due to the scope of the character and it’ll stick with you through the end.

At the end of the day, ANT-MAN doesn’t break down walls or sit atop the increasingly long Marvel Cinematic Universe list, yet it still grows (not shrinks) on you throughout the film. This small corner of the Marvel Universe gets increasingly smaller and ignores the world changing events that the other phase 2 films attempt to reach. This more intimate setting gives a solid introduction to Scott Lang, Hank Pym, and Hope van Dyne, while also leaving us wanting to see them more in the large plans Marvel ultimately has.

Review – 3.5 out of 5 (You should see this in theater)

SDCC 15 – WARCRAFT Movie Footage

0

If there was a video of it shown at SDCC, then someone filmed it. Its a simple fact! Now we have nearly 4 minutes of WARCRAFT movie footage that they showcased at the comic-con last weekend.

While I’ve never been a WARCRAFT fan, I can say this footage does nothing to alleviate my thoughts that this will be John Carter round 2. A CGI spectacle that costs tons to make and will fall flat upon release. Also, it seems rather boring? Where are the humans and why does everything look sub-Avatar in the graphical quality? Even an attendee said he was bored!

Anyways, here’s the footage and let us know if the link is broken!

FANTASTIC FOUR Trailer #2

0

Fox Studios has released a second trailer for the upcoming FANTASTIC FOUR film releasing August 7. After announcing last week that a 3D version of the movie had been scrapped and the imminent release coming up, I was beginning to worry that Denny’s was the only additional advertising we’d get for the film.

With this second official trailer, some things from the first one seem to be different. Theres a plethora of glowing green in the ‘dimension’ they teleport to and get their powers. But at the same time, we finally get to see some actual abilities in action and DOCTOR DOOM longer than a few frames.

Frankly, this should have been the first trailer for the film and it goes to show theres more to this than stretching, invisible, fireball, rock people. Either way, here’s the new trailer! Will you be seeing the film when it releases next month?

SDCC 15 – DEADPOOL Footage

0

So far from SDCC 15, we’ve gotten official BATMAN V SUPERMAN and SUICIDE SQUAD trailers, plus leaked X-MEN: APOCALYPSE footage as well. However, the most exciting and game winning panel for me was the undeniably rude and hilarious DEADPOOL trailer they showed off.

Not being much of a fan of DEADPOOL overall (I hate that he adorns swag in all the stores), this film has my attention and will definitely kick the year off in the right way. Releasing this February (Valentine’s weekend) with an R rating, we expect this film to push a lot of boundaries for superhero films, as well as buttons on people who get upset easily.

As you can tell from the leaked footage below, they hold nothing back. Its been choreographed to great levels, uses profanity almost always, and Ryan Reynolds looks to be having a great time. Oh yeah, and Colossus from the X-Men makes an appearance. Enjoy the footage for yourself and let us know which panel/footage won you over from SDCC this past weekend!

SDCC 15 – SUICIDE SQUAD Trailer

0

After SDCC this year, a lot of leaked footage has hit the internet. Warner Bros. has thrown a fit over it and said to never take footage again! What babies. Instead, the director of SUICIDE SQUAD has taken the high road and given us an official release of the SUICIDE SQUAD footage reel shown on Saturday.

From this, you get the first film version of Harley Quinn and tons more, in a non-funny kind of way. DC has a darker, somber film that will probably rely on a Guardians of the Galaxy style team up, a bunch of a-holes. Also, the new Joker and Batman make an appearance.

After watching this footage, are you more or less excited for Suicide Squad to release next year? We’re definitely on board.

SDCC 15 – X-MEN APOCALYPSE

0

This weekend at SDCC 15 has been a whirlwind! Without Marvel’s presence, every other studio came forth with a ton of information and to keep things simple, I’m going to just post them by what movie did what things. You can check out the insanely popular BATMAN V SUPERMAN trailer that was officially released too.

Now for some X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. The 7th movie in the X-Men franchise, Apocalypse is bringing the mutant villain to the big screen, as well as younger versions of the X-Men team. Yes, he will be blue and violet and fairly true to the comic book look that has become iconic over the years.

From this, we’ve gained Apocalypse has powers of persuasion and is one of the first mutants, the ‘father’ of them all. It also wouldn’t the coming apocalypse without his four horsemen, who have been confirmed to be: Angel, Pyslocke, Magneto, and Storm. If you watch the leaked trailer below, you’ll get to see blurry glimpses of the characters.

This Bryan Singer helmed film looks to be a great follow up to DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, another adaptation from a critically acclaimed story arc in the X-Men universe. Enjoy this leaked trailer from SDCC this year and an official poster for the film as well!

SDCC 15 – First BATMAN V SUPERMAN Trailer

0

Yesterday at San Diego Comic-Con international was HUGE. Probably the least surprising thing to come from it however, was a BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE trailer. Not that this trailer doesn’t deliver to give us hype, but because a trailer was classified the day before.

As I go through all the footage from yesterday, be prepared for an incoming wave of SDCC 15 goodness and leaks. This trailer was NOT leaked and is available to watch at your own discretion.

While I watched it the first time, I got a vibe this is very much a Batman film moreso than a Superman sequel, but even a non-DC fan such as myself must admit how impressive this film looks.

Are you excited to see BATMAN V SUPERMAN next year? Let us know!

Marisa Tomei to portray Aunt May

0

According to a Variety report, Oscar Winner Marisa Tomei will be playing Aunt May in the upcoming SPIDER-MAN film from Marvel and Sony. The report states the offer is still in the making and the studios reached out to the actress last week.

Many people will be quick to claim that this version of Aunt May is young, but seeing as it is a younger Peter Parker, his family status would be younger around him.

As a fan of Seinfeld, many will know that George once had a chance with Tomei but ruined it once he told her that he was engaged.

We’ll be reporting on this as the week progresses and hopefully is something confirmed during SDCC.

STAR WARS Upcoming Movie Slate Leak

0

With SDCC starting tomorrow, a lot of news will be arriving this week. On top of that, some early leaks will happen and it seems STAR WARS is the first victim. During a technical test at Hall H in San Diego, the full list of upcoming Star Wars films has been captured by an attendee who happened to be in there at the right time.

Other than the new trilogy films: The Force Awakens, Episode VIII, and IX, and the recently announced Rogue One film, two new surprises are in store for STAR WARS fans. First off, we know Phil Lord and Chris Miller are working on a Han Solo film, but it seems that is now a Han Solo/Boba Fett film in the Anthology universe.

The biggest surprise is that an Obi Wan film called Kenobi – Balance of the Force is in production and looks to happen sooner than later. My guess is that it will be a 2017 film as well, giving us Star Wars every 6 months for the next few years.

Do you think this screenshot is real or just hopeful? What other movies should they give us in the STAR WARS universe as well?
