SDCC: Guardians of the Galaxy

3

Right before Joss Whedon took the stage and blew everyone’s mind with Avengers 2, Marvel had a pretty solid panel on its hand with the James Gunn and his cast for Guardians of the Galaxy. They brought the majority of the main cast on stage including Chris Pratt (“Zero Dark Thirty”, “Moneyball”) as Peter Quill aka Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana (“Star Trek Into Darkness”, “Avatar”) as Gamora, Dave Bautista (“Riddick”) as Drax the Destroyer, Lee Pace (“The Hobbit,” “Lincoln”) as Ronan the Accuser, Michael Rooker (AMC’s “The Walking Dead”) as Yondu, Karen Gillan (BBC TV’s “Doctor Who”) as Nebula, surprise cast addition two-time Academy Award nominee Djimon Hounsou (“Amistad”, “Gladiator”) as Korath, and Academy Award® winner Benicio del Toro (“Traffic”) as The Collector. Not appearing on at SDCC were Academy Award nominee John C. Reilly (“Chicago”) as Rhomann Dey, and six-time Academy Award nominee Glenn Close (“Albert Nobbs,” “Fatal Attraction”) as Nova Prime.

That is quite a bit of star power to bring to the newest characters to grace the Marvel Universe. I honestly don’t believe there is a bad one in that bunch. What we don’t know includes the voices of Rocket Raccoon and Groot, staple characters in the Guardian’s roster. What we did get though was a new title card and brand new concept art, which I found to be way sexier than the older art, and some of the movie props, including Starlord’s mask and Drax’s daggers. On top of all this goodness, Marvel was kind enough to bring along some footage of the movie, even though they’re only 2 weeks into filming! I don’t have a link to any footage yet, but there have been lots of descriptions posted online (including here). Take a look at the images below and read the new synopsis of the footage shown by Marvel this weekend, which seems to be quite humorous and narrated by John C. Reilly himself.[

alert variation=”alert-success”]We see a desolate alien world, where Peter Quill, aka Starlord, is going inside an ancient temple. He uses a light globe to illuminate the interior, and then goes to steal an old alien orb.

Some alien cops come in with big guns to stop him. “Drop it now,” orders their leader, Borath (Djimon Hounsou). And he asks Quill who he is. “Starlord,” he replies. “Who?” Borath asks. “Starlord, man. Legendary outlaw.” Starlord is wounded. “Forget it.”

Then we see someone activate a wrist transceiver, and we’re in an alien prison, where five creatures have been arrested on Zandar. We see holographic “rapsheets” for all five of them — Drax the Destoryer, Gamora (Zoe Saldana), a personal death machine, Rocket Raccoon, who has over 50 charges of vehicular theft and escape from lockup, Groot, a houseplant/muscle, and then Starlord himself.

Rhomann Dey (John C. Reilly) narrates the whole thing with intense snark, especially when he gets to the part about how Peter Quill calls himself Starlord. Listening to this, Quill cranks up his middle finger as if he’s working a creaky machine. Later, Quill is in prison and Drax is listening to his personal stereo, which is playing a bouncy “gamba gamba” tune. Quill is offended — and then he gets tased.

And then we saw a montage of tons of action footage, including a two-headed alien shooting a gun, a prison riot, tons of Gamora putting the smackdown on people, Rocket Raccoon shooting a big gun with a vicious look on his face.

The footage ends with John C. Reilly saying, “They call themselves the Guardians of the Galaxy. What a bunch of A-holes.” And we see the five of them lined up, like the Usual Suspects.[/alert]

Editorial: ComicUI takes on Avengers 2: Age of Ultron

3

Here at ComicUI, our passion is to provide readers with up to date  information most of the time and occasionally our thoughts tend to slip through. Now that Marvel had their panel at SDCC this year and several announcements were made, I felt it perfect time to give you some information and thoughts on sequel to the one of the biggest films ever made.

Avengers 2: Age of Ultron. We now know the title, a logo, and they even had some sort of teaser trailer for display. This was definitely a bigger surprise than anything DC offered up this year. Why is it shocking you ask? Then you asked the same question I did. Hearing the title I didn’t ask “what” or “who” but rather the “why” for the film’s title.

For the uninitiated, Age of Ultron is the name of the latest event for Marvel comics. It spanned 10 issues, had minimal crossover fallout, changed the status quo for years to come, and ultimately was, honestly, underwhelming. The title character, Ultron, didn’t factor into any of the later issues and the premise fell flat around halfway through. I didn’t hate it but I felt the ending focused too much on the next big event/universe change and not enough on having an actual ending. There were definitely some oh snap moments that kept me going. It was just sad to see one of the Avengers greatest villains go out not with a bang, but with a whimper.

My strongest prediction, is that the title will need a change. Age of Ultron rolls off the tongue, but the association with a mediocre (or underwhelmingly) received series isn’t the strongest move for a sequel with expectations higher than any vaulted ceiling. It is also a play on Age of Apocalypse, a Marvel event that still has implications in the comic universe today. Apocalypse gained notoriety in the X-men cartoon in the 90’s, but Ultron’s name doesn’t pull that weight just yet. There have been episodes on the Avenger cartoon TV shows based on him, but the traction doesn’t exist yet. Many people reading this may not even know who he is at this current point. I may be the only one having concern, but this is early. We still have a ton of time between now and then before we have to actually worry.

The exact Age of Ultron storyline would not work in the Marvel Cinematic universe at this point anyways. Time travel has not been introduced, Hank Pym/Ant-man/Giant Man (creator of Ultron) is getting a film after this one, and the story focused on Susan Storm/Invisible Woman and Wolverine, both properties of Fox. I feel very sure they will not be making appearances in this film or anytime soon with the avengers. This also gives me a feeling that this is a working title, nothing finalized, and won’t revolve around the event series that came out this year, it will be an original or semi original story created by Joss Whedon.

Whedon has been very vocal about including Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch in the upcoming movie as well. This is all good and such, but how? Age of Ultron didn’t focus on either of these characaters, both were not in the Avengers during Ultron’s initial attacks on the team in 1968, and the only series that comes to mind that covers all 3 as primary characters is (regrettably) Ultimates 3. This travesty lead to Utimatum and proved to me that Jeph Loeb lost whatever magic he once had. I won’t touch any work by him anymore due to Ultimates 3. Long story short, the Ultimate Ultron shoots the scarlet witch, enraging Quicksilver and Magneto, causing world devastation, etc. If they follow this arc, god help us, although Magneto is currently a Fox property, so it would be hard for most of this to happen. However, it is important to point out that The Vision, a robot Avenger who was created by Ultron, and the Scarlet Witch end up marrying each other in the main storyline, There’s magic and robots and romance. I’ll return to the Vision later in the article.

How do they do Ultron before Ant-man movie? Hank Pym created him to be the best, smartest AI in the world, which we know how that goes. A perfect robot to assist and evolve and adapt, something that had never been done before.  As all robot stories tend to do, Ultron outgrew his father and his programming determined that humans should be eradicated/enslaved and a robot evolution should take place. Each time he faced the avengers, Ultron would learn and adapt and upgrade his systems. The next time it would be more and more difficult to destroy him. He wasn’t created out of evil, but rather accident by the “great” hero. I put these in quotes due to Hank Pym being someone crazy, but brilliant. With Edgar wright (Shaun of the dead, Scott pilgrim) penning and helmng the Ant-man movie, introducing Ultron first would be a) peculiar and b) too serious for an Ant-man film. Chronologically, if we follow Ultron’s roots and creation, he should come post-Ant-man, however we will be seeing him first. It’s gonna be interesting to say the least with lots of surprises along the way..

But what about Thanos? Why spend an entire movie building up the Mad Titan and not letting him have his day? Thanos screen time was minimal at best with the fewest lines ever, but the reveal was chilling nonetheless. Kevin Feige soon stated that we will see Thanos in Guardians of the Galaxy next fall, which makes sense due to Gamorra being his ‘adopted’ daughter. Don’t expect it to be the main villain, but the mastermind behind another plot or two. Marvel showcased the Infinity Gauntlet a few years ago at SDCC and put it for a few seconds in Thor, but now they’re going with a tin can (not complaining, just a joke!)? Definitely interesting and makes me ponder their goals, but I trust Marvel and above all, I trust Joss. They have not steered us wrong yet.  Maybe we will see Thanos come courting Death at a later date, which means I’ll have to replace all my Thanos artwork with Ultron. Such a rough life I live.

Foremost, these are not complaints I have with Avengers 2, but rather questions and ideas that arise once something so shocking is announced. With this news, I see lots of silver lining on the horizon. The predictable villain would have been Thanos and some Infinity Gauntlet quest. This story would have been formulaic and the Internet could tell us what would happen years before it it even hits theaters, even I had some pretty solid theories. Yet this puts us fanboys in a tizzy and has really even thrown off my normal thinking pattern. I can’t fathom how this will even work, let alone realize we will be seeing Ultron as a main villain, but I’m more than excited. This new story and shake up could be something that prevents Marvel from stagnating and lets them stay ahead in the comic book movie race. I will always give them credit for taking characters no one cared about and creating huge franchises out of them. Iron Man was just a b-list character in the comics before they reinvented it with RDJ, and nobody had any hope for Thor, yet they both yielded great results for the risk taken.

Lastly, this brings me to some speculation that has been going around about…Vin Diesel. We have heard he is talking to Marvel actively about being a character in some undisclosed film. The two biggest rumors are that he is voicing Rocket Raccoon in Guardians of the Galaxy (no one has been confirmed to voice the character as of this writing) or the Vision. Please note the last photo of Diesel as he left the Marvel office does in fact include Hank Pym as a primary focus. If Avengers 2 is taking on the villain, then the Vision is definitely not out of reach. But, bear with me here, what if we take it a step farther and he ends up in the role of Ultron himself? It wouldn’t be a stretch to only have one villain, but we won’t know until an official announcement is made regarding the driving force behind the second film. To me,its looking more and more likely Vinny could be a robot instead of a raccoon.

Avengers 2: Age of Ultron is scheduled to be released May 4, 2015 which is shaping up to be quite the year for filmgoers. Written and directed by Joss Whedon, we will see the return of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Bruce Banner/Hulk, the Black Widow, Hawkeye, Nick Fury, S.H.I.E.L.D. and potentially a few more characters from Guardians of the Galaxy and whoever else will be called upon to save the Earth. You can count on me to be there Day 1 (if not 3 weeks early like was offered for Avengers 1) and you can always count on reading more about the film as information is released on ComicUI. Please feel free to leave your comments and questions below, we will be more than happy to answer.

Evolution of Wolverine’s Costume

2

In honor of SDCC going on right now and The Wolverine hitting theaters next week (Hugh Jackman’s 6th time as Logan, with the 7th film still in production), ComicUI reader Kyle has sent us a link to an info-comic about Wolverine’s costume since his introduction in 1974. Its quite the read covering a few styles and variations you may or may not be familiar with (Noseless? That was a new one) So pop your claws and have a gander at this fine bit of information.

First Review for “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Drops Online

0

Somehow, some way, the folks over at Poptimal got their hands on the pilot episode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and they put up one heck of a review. Just a heads up, there may be spoilers for the show, but I feel pretty good after reading it. Its a straight forward review that tackles it objectively and not subjectively, and I respect that. You can check out their review on their site, but if you keep scrolling you’ll find the entire review posted here too. Enjoy!

Just to clarify, this is not ComicUI’s take on the movie and this is not our review.

[hero tagline=”First Review: Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”]Whether you are a fan of Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Angel, or Dollhouse, one thing is clear, director Joss Whedon’s ability to create ensemble casts is second to none–and after the box office success of The Avengers, Whedon returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe looking for another hit with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Whedon has managed to deliver one of the best pilots of the fall season.

What is S.H.I.E.L.D?
“We are the line between the world and the much weirder world,” Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton) responds when asked what S.H.I.E.L.D (Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement and Logistics Division) means to him. “We protect people from news they aren’t ready to hear and when we can’t do that, we keep them safe.” A lot has changed in the Marvel world since the events of The Battle of New York at the end of The Avengers. While Iron Man 3 skimped on the impact and aftereffects of the Chitauri alien invasion, S.H.I.E.L.D. delves into the ramifications.

The existence of other superheroes outside of Iron Man is now public knowledge. Scavenged alien technology is experimented on or sold on the black market. An anonymous hacker group known as The Rising Tide aims to reveal the truth S.H.I.E.L.D. wants to keep from the public. A combination of these events ultimately sets up the events of the first episode.

The Plot
The pilot opens in East Los Angeles, where viewers are first introduced to unemployed, single father Michael Peterson (J. August Richards). When a nearby building explodes, Michael dons his hoodie and rescues a woman trapped inside the burning building. When the cellphone cameras of the bystanders capture the daring rescue, the world believes they’ve found a new superhero. Unfortunately for Michael, the videos get the attention of S.H.I.E.L.D., as well as Skye (Chloe Bennet), a member of The Rising Tide, who manages to see his face after his daring rescue. Agent Grant Ward is brought in by S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Maria Hill (Colbie Smulders) to recruit Ward for Coulson’s new team. That’s right, Coulson lives! But more on that later.

In order to track down the hooded hero, Coulson (Clark Gregg) puts together a specialized mobile team – Agent Grant Ward, Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge). With the help of Skye, who is brought in by Coulson, the agents are able to learn more about Michael; how he got his powers and the threat he poses if gone unchecked.

Coulson Lives?!?
“Wait, Coulson died in The Avengers,” you cry! “Loki stabbed him!” One answer everyone is looking for in Coulson’s revival is answered, but much mystery hangs over the details of his return. Since what Coulson believes is the truth may not even be correct, this is one answer that won’t be found in the series’ pilot episode.

Is it more of a Marvel show or a Whedon show?
Whedon has found the perfect balance of Marvel and his trademark witty dialogue with S.H.I.E.L.D. The world is very Marvel, with callbacks and references littered throughout the episode, but the dialogue and ensemble delivers everything you love about Whedon.

Do I have to watch all the Marvel movies to understand what’s going on?
Watching the Marvel movies is not a requirement to understanding Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but I recommend having at least watched The Avengers. Those who have seen everything up to Iron Man 3 will have a more rewarding experience as they’ll be able to pick up on all the references the show has to offer.

Performances
Clark Gregg has not skipped a beat when it comes to Phil Coulson. Not only is he cool, collective, and witty, Gregg makes you want to trust every word that comes out of his mouth. Iain De Caestecker and Elizabeth Henstridge have a fantastic chemistry as Fitz and Simmons. The back and forth, fast paced bickering and their mannerisms will easily make them fan favorites. Without a doubt, the best performance of the pilot is brought by J. August Richards–he delivers a final monologue that is easily the most memorable moment of the episode.

Tech
One of my favorite bits of the S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot was the imagination and creativity put into the gadgetry used by the agents. Whether it’s a cloth used to lift fingerprints, a tray that sees through walls, hologram 3D mapping, or Fitz’s remote controlled drones named after the seven dwarves in Snow White, the tech just feels cool, imaginative, and believable.

Problems
While I enjoyed majority of the episode, S.H.I.E.L.D. it is not without faults. Witty dialogue deflates the brilliantly built tension in many scenes, which gets frustrating and leaves the viewer feeling vaguely let down. An example is a scene (from the trailer) when Skye warns Michael about SHIELD. Instead of taking her seriously, we get a witty line about whether or not he should actually carry a shield. I have no problem with these types of jokes, but when they occur way too often it becomes an issue of focus. The resolution for the biggest issue the agents face is swiftly handled without a follow up–we get handed a solution, but without no explanation on how it was reached it feels a little like Whedon ran out of time and decided wrap up the episode. The thing is, we want to know what went in to putting it together.

Final Thoughts
With a strong cast and smart script, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. delivers a smart, action-packed thrill ride.

First Footage of Electro

0

San Diego Comic Con is starting tomorrow, but that hasn’t stopped the exhibitors from kicking up a notch with their promos. First up, we get to see our look at Jamie Foxx as Electro from Amazing Spider-man 2. We got our pictures last week, but this showcases how he will look in the film, including his voice that has been featured on many late night talk shows. Check out this even sicker footage and let us know which presentation you’re excited to see this year at SDCC!

Rumor: Hulk 2: Incredibly Indestructible

1

Rumors, strictly rumors are all we have regarding a Hulk movie. Last year, after watching Avengers early, I was informed that we could be looking at a Planet Hulk or World War Hulk film in the future. Albeit a lofty goal, fans clamored over this news as it become more wide spread and near epidemic. However, as of today, we have a new rumor regarding the future role of Hulk and his alter ego, Bruce Banner in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Stories are that the next film could be based on Mark Waid’s Indestructible Hulk comic series that started with Marvel NOW. This is really awesome due to the increased popularity over here at ComicUI with Waid, his movement into digital comics (Thrillbent) and how they’ve taken a character that was pure smash and turned him into something absolutely fantastic.

For those unfamiliar with Indestructible Hulk, Bruce Banner has turned himself over to SHIELD for use as a point and aim weapon. They can use the Hulk as a WMD and in turn, he can use their resources to create solutions for world problems. As a brilliant man (something we rarely get to see in the films), Bruce Banner has quickly crafted some great inventions that could be used by SHIELD and the Marvel cinematic world, really helping it grow. Also, it focuses on a confident Banner, something we never get to see. He’s not running from his condition, but embracing it as he goes. Its a great read, if you get a chance to pick up an issue or two, do so.

If they take this storyline and implement it into a movie, it would do a huge favor to the Hulk and Banner as film characters, probably turning him into the next Tony Stark of the silver screen, due to his confidence and intelligence. If not, oh well. What do you think would make the best Hulk story for the movies?

First Look at the Amazing Spider-Man 2 Official Logo

1

After getting that great look of Jamie Foxx as Electro last week, we’re treated to an amazing (zing!) look at the new logo for the upcoming Spider-man movie. While the untrained eye may not even notice a difference, upon closer inspection, it becomes apparent that this version of the spider is actually a little more menacing. The legs are curved in more and have sharper tips while there seems to be more bends in them as well. This spider seems to be evolving into the venom/black suit logo as well. This is noticeable at the bottom of the spider where it comes into 2 points instead of just one. The thickness kind of makes me think of a more poisonous, dangerous arachnid as well. Lastly, there are pincers on the mouth too, adding to that menacing look.

Take a peek at the new logo below and a fancy banner image that puts together Spidey and Electro with New York as the backdrop. Stay tuned to ComicUI as more news drops before SDCC opens up this month and don’t forget to vote in our ASM2 Poll this week!

More Electro-fying Amazing Spider-Man 2 Pics

1

More awesome, sick, amazing, electrifying, and sick photos from the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man 2 have surfaced. We get a look at Jamie Foxx’s better half, which includes what resembles my apartment’s thermostat embedded in his skull, as well as some eerily creepy eyes and skin. That look has just floored me, I’m impressed.
Included with that are some suit photos for Spider-Man, which include some major changes over the last installment. You can take note in the eye covers, chest piece, color scheme, web shooters, and more. I’m really digging these new looks and Amazing Spider-man 2 might be quite the improvement over the first one (which I thought wasn’t bad, but click on this to read my thoughts on it). That is exactly what we need. So check out the images and leave your thoughts below.
